Ajax vs Lyon Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Juventus and Monaco may be the main attraction on Wednesday evening, but this is a worthy warm up. The first of two Europa League semi-finals will take place late Wednesday afternoon when Ajax host Lyon. Juventus await. Below are our match predictions, betting tips and preview.
Game: Ajax vs Lyon
Venue: Johan Cruyff Stadium
Kick-off: Wednesday 3rd May, 5PM
After the passing of legendary footballer Johan Cruyff in 2016, Ajax have moved to re-name the Amsterdam ArenA in honour of their greatest ever player. Ajax are just four points behind Feyenoord in Holland but have just to games to catch them. Despite Bosz’s insistence they’re still in the race - they’re not.
Ajax have however already done enough to feature in European competition again next year but the Europa League remains their best opportunity of both a trophy and Champions League football next year. The same can be said for Lyon who are a whopping 20 points behind the runaway top three in France.
A big part of both Lyon and Ajax’s failings this season has been away form. It sounds harsh to criticise a side who have only lost a handful of games all season, but Ajax have been undone six times on their travels which is far from the standard Feyenoord have set, and the hosts will need to make the most of this first leg. Lyon have lost seven of their last 12.
Ajax are expected to make use of their home advantage at 5/4 with Coral whilst the draw is available at 2/1. Lyon have goals in them and you can back them at 5/2 with Coral to win this game.
Lyon had their moments in the Champions League but they weren’t up to the standard. They’ve fared better in the Europa League, beating AZ Alkmaar a whopping 11-2 on aggregate. They’ve also seen off Roma and Besiktas at home, but were beaten by both of those sides away. It took a penalty shootout for Lyon to make this stage of the competition.
Lyon have arguably only beaten two sides of similar quality to Ajax in European competition since 2010 on their travels. Ajax have made light work of winning all seven home games in this seasons Europa League and they’ll know the importance of making your home game count after coming close to elimination against Schalke. That game, like so many of Ajax’s in this competition, featured just two goals. That’s given us valuable odds given Lyon games tend to feature goals regardless of the opponent.
Back our Free Betting Tip: Over 3.5 goals at odds of 6/4 with Coral.
Metz and St Etienne are the only sides to fail to score in Lyon’s past 13 away games, with the Ligue 1 side scoring in their last 29 games. Even if they do struggle away, it’s clear Lyon have enough to take an away goal from this. The hosts have scored at least three in five of seven home league games and the open nature of Lyon’s gameplan should give Ajax the opportunities to replicate such form.
Back our Score Prediction: a 3-2 Ajax win at odds of 20/1 with Bet365.
Kasper Dolberg has not been prolific but he is the top scorer in a team where the responsibility has really been spread out. Klaseen is only one goal behind him with 13 and five players have at least seven, but Dolberg is on penalty duty and has stepped up in some big moments this season.
Back our Scorer Prediction: Kasper Dolberg to score at odds of 7/5 with Coral.
