Barnsley vs Aston Villa Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Aston Villa failed to take advantage of playing an hour against 10 men, leaving them with just one win in seven. Barnsley have the same point tally but have won four of five games at Oakwell this season.
Game: Barnsley vs Aston Villa
Venue: Oakwell Stadium
Kick-off: Saturday 16th September, 5.30PM
Despite only winning one game so far, Aston Villa have only lost two, and neither of them were at home. A 4th-minute red card for Adama Traore would have filled Villa fans with hope that a potential turning point was on the way, but what was to follow has only served to exacerbate Villa’s slow start.
Villa were wasteful of chances and for all their dominance it never felt like they were going to score against Boro. Villa’s night was summed up when Scott Hogan couldn’t move quick enough when he, unfortunately, blocked a teammates shot on the Middlesbrough goal line. Villa will now go on the road in search of their first away win.
Barnsley have the same points total as Aston Villa but will be feeling a lot better about themselves. With only won draw in sight, six of Barnsley’s seven points have come via wins. Both of those were here at home and if you throw in their two League Cup ties to date, Barnsley have won four of five on this ground.
Barnsley are underdogs despite being the hosts and you can back them at 12/5 with Bet365. The draw is available at 13/5 with Betfair whilst Aston Villa, the favorites, are 23/20 with William Hill.
Barnsley are unbeaten in three and can take massive confidence from a 1-1 draw at Preston last week. They carried that momentum forward on Tuesday evening, twice coming from behind to level, before an 88th minute Adam Hammill goal saw off Derby and set up a Wembley date with Spurs. Those goals took Barnsley’s home tally to 13 goals this season.
Villa have managed 13 goals themselves, except theirs have come across nine games in all competitions, with the Villains failing to score more than once on seven occasions. Last years away form saw them win just four of 23 Championship games, whilst Barnsley, despite struggling overall, managed to avoid defeat in 74% of their home games.

Villa have kept three clean sheets in their last 23 away games and have only scored in 14 of those themselves. That’s a dangerous combination and despite the attacking talent they have, things aren’t clicking. But even in victory Barnsley have kept few teams out, and Villa can at least be happy with their defensive efforts this season.
Back our Score Prediction: 1-1 Draw at best odds 11/2 with Betfred
Youngster Ryan Hedges has popped up with three goals this season and there has been some contribution from the midfield. Despite that, you feel Tom Bradshaw is going to be key to any success (or rather survival) this season. Bradshaw has five goals in all competitions, whilst Villa have no stand out scorers at present.
Back our Scorer Prediction: Back Tom Bradshaw to score at 13/5 with Paddy Power
