Benfica vs Manchester United Predictions, Betting Tips & Preview

Match Preview

Manchester United come into this game having won their last six games in all competitions, but Benfica could be United’s toughest European test so far. But the Portuguese side have already disappointed in this group and are under some mounting pressure.

Game: Benfica vs Manchester United

Venue: Estadio do Sport

Kick-off: Wednesday 18th October, 7.45PM

Red card or no red card, Basel’s 5-0 win over Benfica has to be proof that this is a much weaker outfit than we’re used to. It’s just one win in their last six games overall now, with both Champions League game resulting in a loss and their chances of qualification looking rather slim with United in waiting.

Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United haven’t really slipped up so far this season and have won their last six games. That includes a pair of comfortable 3-0 and 4-1 wins over Basel and away to CSKA, the two sides that have beaten Benfica so far. Their attacking threat looks to be too much for an out of sorts side.

United have managed three or more goals in seven of their 10 games so far this season, and as strong as they can be, Benfica do have a history of shipping goals in the Champions League. They’ve allowed 20 in their last nine games and have failed to beat United in their last four meetings.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Benfica are priced at 15/4 with Bet365 to win here whilst the draw can be backed at 13/5 with Betfred. Given the recent form of these two sides, it’s no surprise Manchester United are an odds-on favorite at 5/6 with Sky Bet.

Manchester United’s away record in the Champions League has been chequered ever since 2011, but this has the look of a side that’s more than capable of not only balancing the demands of domestic and European football but perhaps even capable of challenging for both simultaneously.

Benfica on their day are a match for most sides and the atmosphere inside the Stadium of Light could make this an uncomfortable affair for United if the hosts did get their noses in front, but their form is providing no indication that they can upset the apple cart here. United are in fine scoring form, and whilst Benfica always score, they can’t keep pace with United

Benfica rarely fail to find the back of the net at home. Sporting were the last side to walk away from the Stadium of Light with a clean sheet, and was a full two years ago in October 2017. Benfica have scored in their last 10 home UCL games including against Atletico, Dortmund, Munich and Napoli, but again, United could have too much.

Back our Score Prediction: Manchester United 3-1 at 13/1 with Bet365

Romelu Lukaku has been in fantastic form for United and after grabbing some goals on matchday nine, the Belgian hitman was afforded a rest so should be coming back from the international break ready and raring to go. Benfica are likely to deal with such physicality.
