Burton Albion vs Birmingham City Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Match Preview

Burton have found life in the Championship tough already this season having lost all three games. Whilst red cards played their part, the Albion were outplayed by all of Cardiff, Hull and Middlesbrough. Birmingham have failed to score in two of three and are looking for their first points away from home here.

Game: Burton Albion vs Birmingham City

Venue: Pirelli Stadium

Kick-off: Friday 18th August, 7.45PM

Burton were soundly beaten in each of their last two outings but only succumb to a late goal against Cardiff here. Despite losing all three games and allowing seven goals, Burton have played and defended much better than the stats would lead you to believe. Boro were clinical with their only two clear chances on Tuesday, whilst Burton’s game plan was torn to shreds after Jackson Irvine was sent off. It was 1-1 at the time, with Hull eventually winning 4-1.

Birmingham have failed to impress themselves, but like Burton, have offered better than their score lines would suggest. Bolton were more than a match for Redknapp's men on Tuesday who were beaten by Ipswich in their only away game thus far, but they did show powers of recovery to beat Bristol City 2-1. Prior to that they’d stuck five past Crawley, so things are somewhat clicking going forward.

Bookmakers are struggling to split these sides here with Burton Albion priced at 13/8 with Bet365 and Birmingham at the same odds. Some books make Burton the narrowest of favourites though. The draw is offered at 23/10 with Bet365.Jackson Irvine returns here for Burton which will certainly help their chances. The potentially sought after Australian international was Burton’s most influential player last season and set them on their way against Hull before an unfortunate red card. Their game against Boro may have played out differently had Irvine played.

Birmingham have found their feet in stages but yet to get going overall. A trip to Burton is a tough test for many teams as the Brewers beat Leeds, Wolves, Norwich, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby here last season. Despite struggling against the lesser sides, Burton caused problems for the playoff contenders and Birmingham could fall into that category this season.

Birmingham, much like Burton, have looked fairly comfortable when defending despite allowing a goal in each of their four games so far. Bristol City definitely penned the Blues in for large parts of the game early on, but Redknapp's men dug in and came out the other side. But the big concern for the Blues here is the injury that Michael Morrison picked up last time out. Morrison is a key player and leaves some uncertainty in the camp with Shotton tipped to depart and Redknapp so far failing to agree terms for any potential replacements.

Both sides are quite strong at protecting the lead and should have no problems doing so in what promises to be a scrappy, blood and thunder affair at the Pirelli Stadium on Friday evening. Whoever gets their noses in front may just see the game out from that point, and we may have to wait until the second half to witness a goal. Burton defended better than the scoreline against Boro suggests and matched Hull until a red card. Jackson Irvine returns here which is a big boost for the hosts.

Back our Score Prediction: Burton 1-0 at 13/2 with Coral

Luke Varney, Lukas Akins and Marvin Sordell all offer options up top but arguably not fantastic ones. Most of Burton’s play seems to come from the middle of the park and usually revolves around Jackson Irvine but he saves his best for away from home. It’s a total lottery sticking anything on a goal scorer in a game like this, but Lukas Akins is the man who has scored or assisted in all of his career starts against Birmingham to date.

Back our Scorer Prediction: Back Lukas Akins to score at 7/2 with Bet365
