Cardiff City vs Sunderland Predictions, Betting Tips & Preview
Saturday’s early kick-off comes from the Championship where a (very) slowly improving Sunderland side will visit a struggling Cardiff City side. Neil Warnock’s men still occupy a play-off place but they’ll be looking to turn their dipping form around at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Game: Cardiff City vs Sunderland
Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
Kick-off: Saturday, 13th January, 12.30
The absolute high point of Sunderland’s season prior to the recent managerial change was an opening day victory at Norwich, a side believed to be a strong contender at the time, followed by a cup win at a supposedly strong League One side Bury. Both sides have gone on to struggle massively since and Sunderland fell to pieces.
Sunderland have improved to win three, draw two and lose four of their last nine games. It’s inconsistent, but it’s still their best points run since winning four of seven in late 2016. Hosts Cardiff are winless in five games and could drop as low as fifth. Having recently held a several point gap in the promotion places, City could find themselves just two clear in the playoffs.
Despite that poor run of form, City remains a tough side to beat. City have gone unbeaten in 12 of 14 home games so far this season, but they’ve lost their last two here, increasing the number of sides to leave Cardiff with points to five. Four of those sides were mid-table or lower.
You may argue Cardiff are being shown too much respect as they’re best odds 3/4 with Bet365. Sunderland are a rank outsider at odds of 4/1 with Sky Bet whilst the draw is available at 12/5 through Ladbrokes.
Sunderland are returning to full strength this week and can also count on Jake Clarke-Salter to add some quality at the back. Despite a lack of experience, Clarke-Salter looked every bit a Premier League player whilst on loan at Bristol Rovers. Coleman already has Sunderland tightening up and Cardiff could find themselves in for a real scrap here. Warnock’s teams usually thrive in such situations, but the odds on the visitors are too big to ignore.

Sunderland fans have witnessed just eight goals in their teams last six games, and they have fared well away in recent weeks. Sunderland were able to hold free-scoring league leaders Wolves to a 0-0 draw and recently won at Forest.
Back our Score Prediction: 1-1 at 13/2 with Bet365
Sunderland do not have a standout scorer although there are hopes Josh Maja will be a big part of a change in fortunes. Joe Ralls has six from midfield for City, as does Junior Hoilett, but the blues have very much shared the responsibility when it comes to scoring. Sol Bamba has provided a lift in key moments this season and a game like this could hinge on set-pieces. Let’s go for something a bit different.
Back our Scorer Prediction: Sol Bamba at 9/1 with Coral
