Match Preview

Antonio Conte has said it’s impossible for his Chelsea side to win the title. Whilst that may be true given City’s form, it won’t stop the Blues from trying. The visit of Southampton presents another winnable game against a struggling side. Pellegrino’s men were beaten 4-1 at home by Leicester on Wednesday.

Game: Chelsea vs Southampton

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Kick-off: Saturday 16th November, 3.00PM

Southampton’s home form is an issue. They’ve picked up just three wins in 11 games across all competitions, and they’re allowing too many goals. Winning away in the top flight is never easy and that makes the clubs current home form all the more trouble.

But it must be said that the Saints have looked far more organised on their travels. Liverpool, Stoke and Manchester City have all beaten them, but none of those grounds are easy places to go, and the Saints were level with minutes to go in two of those games. They’ve picked up six points and remained unbeaten across their four away away games.

Chelsea are going to do their best to pick up points and chase down those above them regardless of what Conte says. First probably is beyond them, but United have shown enough vulnerability that second is not. It just depends on consistently Conte’s men can perform in the near year.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Chelsea are clear favourites at best odds 4/11 with Bet365, whilst the draw shouldn’t be written off entirely at 4/1 with Betfair. But a Saints win does look unlikely given recent form, and they are available at 8/1 with Unibet.

The Saints appear to be slipping toward trouble, but their performances through their last few away games show that they can be a very hard side to break down. The goals of Charlie Austin are becoming timely, and he’ll surely find chances against a Chelsea defence that has allowed seven of the last nine visitors (including Nottingham Forest) to score. That hasn’t stopped them from winning five of six here though, and they should have enough for three points here.

Six of the last seven meetings on this ground have seen both teams score. All of those featured three or more goals, and the Saints have found a way to goal in five straight games now, but haven’t kept a clean sheet in that time either. Chelsea have shown in recent home games that they have the quality and character to out score their opponents even when falling behind in games.

Back our Score Prediction: Chelsea to win 2-1 at 15/2 with Betfair

Alvaro Morata helped turn the game around against Newcastle and gave Chelsea all three points with his goal against Manchester United. The Spanish international has been crucial to Chelsea’s success so far this season and will go in search of his 10th goal here.

Back our Scorer Prediction: Alvaro Morata at 4/5 with Bet365
