Gillingham vs Sheffield United Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
United have been slow starters and find themselves just above the relegation zone. The home side are in much better form here and they’ve had the better of United lately. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: Gillingham vs Sheffield United
Venue: Priestfields Stadium
Kick off: Sunday 4th September, 2.15pm
Gillingham left Sheffield with a point last single courtesy of a 0-0 draw. It extended their clean sheet against United to 270 minutes having beaten them 4-0 and 2-0 during their last two trips to this ground. The home side have started well this season, taking 10 points from five games.
The Gills were unbeatable at home through the first half of last season and tailed off at the end. They’ve started this season with a win and a draw here, although they haven’t quite found their scoring boots (by their standards) just yet.
United have lost five of seven and picked up just the one win if you consider their cup games which saw them exit at the hands of Crewe Alexandra. It’s been a very poor start to the season which has seen them lose both away games, although they have had a tough fixture list.
United were only beaten four times on their travels last season although failed to win a majority of games at the same time. Gillingham have failed to put their opponents away so far this season, playing out a number of close run games.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
Home side Gillingham are best odds 13/8 with Bet365 although their price seems to be rising. The draw can be backed at 5/2 with Boylesports and the away side are 19/10 with William Hill to get what would be a surprising win given the form.
Gillingham have seen four of five games feature at least three goals and both teams have scored in them with the exception of the Gills just not turning up in a bizarre 5-0 defeat to Scunthorpe. United have seen three goals in each of their last three games.
These sides have yet to keep a clean sheet between them in the league. Gillingham allowed 14 visitors to score last season, which is much better than United who kept five clean sheets. Both have lacked at the back this season, and the Gills haven’t been as clinical as they should be.
Both teams to score is our free betting tip here at best odds of 4/5 with Boylesports. Terrific value given the circumstances. I do expect goals, but I’m not sure we’ll get a repeat of last seasons 4-0. United will gradually tighten up and shouldn’t be completely written off here. Gillingham to win 2-1 is our correct score prediction at 9/1 with Bet Victor.
There’s no shortage of talent that could find the back of the net for these teams. Gillingham have had seven different scorers already this season, whilst United have seen their main marksman Billy Sharp find the net twice, although both of those goals came at home.
The biggest threat on the pitch has to be Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. Not only has he scored three goals so far this season, history shows us he’s comfortable at this level. JET notched 24 goals for Bristol City and play a part in their promotion season. Emmanuel-Thomas to score is best odds 9/5 with Stan James.
