Manchester City vs Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips & Preview
Manchester City will be keen to put last weekends blip behind them and re-assert their dominance as Premier League leaders. It’s a tall order to stop them for a Newcastle side that lost to Guardiola’s men less than a month ago.
Game: Manchester City vs Newcastle
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Kick-off: Saturday, 20th January, 5.30pm
Newcastle make the trip across to Manchester having been beaten just once in six games through all competitions. That run has included a pair of away wins at West Ham and Stoke, whilst their only loss came against Manchester City (0-1) at St James Park. At the time they were the first team to prevent City scoring two or more goals since Everton on opening day.
Newcastle’s blueprints were criticised for their lack of positive, forward thinking play and deep defensive position on that occasion. Although the game plan did eventually keep Newcastle within touching distance for 90 minutes, they never really troubled the Manchester City goal enough. At the other end a glut of guilt edged chances zipped wide and smashed off the woodwork, as in reality City could have run riot.
Newcastle can claim to be in a much better vein of form this time around although that, it can be argued, may be down to an easier fixture list. Newcastle’s approach to the game will be interesting to see. Although the expectations are they’ll sit deep once again, City have made a habit of demolishing such game plans. Guardiola’s men have instead struggled against those willing to get at them.
Manchester City are the inevitable favourites at best odds of 1/7 with Sky Bet. The draw can be backed at 8/1 with Betfred whilst Newcastle are a whopping 22/1 with Betfair.
Making a case for any side winning at the Etihad this season is a tough one, and perhaps barring a very tough Champions League draw, it probably won’t happen. Several sides have come close to a draw recently but City have found the answers. City have been thoroughly tested (and finally toppled) in their last four away games, but their home form remains emphatic. Newcastle have struggled against top six sides, but only United have pummeled them and they have taken the lead against United, Chelsea and Liverpool.
Back our Free Betting Tip: Man City win and both to score at 6/4 with Betfred
Newcastle have scored in five of their last six away games including trips to United and Chelsea. They’ve also shown character coming from behind, and City’s gung-ho approach does lead to them giving away chances. Six of the last seven sides to visit the Etihad have scored and City have wons those games largely by a two to three goal margin.
Back our Score Prediction: Man City 3-1 at 9/1 with Bet365
Sergio Aguero has scored six goals in his last four home games and is always a likely goal threat, but the odds on him to score are not worth the risk. Raheem Sterling has been just as dangerous and scored the goal that sunk Newcastle the last time they met.
Back our Scorer Prediction: Raheem Sterling at 19/20 with Ladbrokes
