Newcastle United vs Queen Park Rangers predictions, betting tips & match preview
Game: Newcastle United vs QPR
Venue: St James Park
Kick-off: Tuesday 31st January, 7.45PM
Both sides come into this game on the back of a disappointing loss, but find themselves in very different positions overall. Newcastle were beaten 3-0 away to Oxford on Saturday which was definitely a surprise, but Rafa’s men remain well on course to earn promotion straight back to the Premier League.
Queens Park Rangers lost 2-1 at home to Burton which was even more disappointing and equally damaging. Ian Holloway’s men had seemed to have been making good progress, testing Villa and surprising Reading and so nearly Fulham recently.
A win here for Newcastle would see them move back to the top of the Championship whilst a loss for QPR and negative results elsewhere could see them just slip back into a relegation dogfight that they seemed sure to pull away from. A result to put a blip behind them, however, could rubber stamp their revival under Ian Holloway.
Newcastle are obvious and heavy favourites here at odds of 1/3 with Bet365 whilst the draw is available at 4/1 with Bet Victor. Visiting QPR can be backed at a hefty price of 9/1 with Betfair.
I suppose you would say this is just a free shot for QPR, who are fully expected to lose this game. Going to Reading and winning 1-0 gives them the blueprints for an upset here though, and that’s the exact scoreline by which Sheffield Wednesday and Blackburn, twice, have beaten Newcastle recently.
Realistically, it will take a mammoth defensive performance combined with a lot of luck. Newcastle will not want back to back losses on their record and Dwight Gayle and co will slow back into the line-up fit and raring to go. Back Newcastle -1.25AH at 17/20 with Bet365.
Because we have seen such an improved set of performances from QPR defensively recently, and with their earlier 6-0 mauling in mind, the least the Hoops will want to do here is stay rigid at the back and give a better account of themselves in front of the St James’ Park faithful. Back Newcastle to win 2-0 at odds 11/2 with Betfair.
It goes without saying that Dwight Gayle is just a class above in this division and it certainly helps that he has so much quality service coming his way. Back Dwight Gayle to continue his good form here and net at odds of 8/13 with Paddy Power.
