Czech Republic vs Northern Ireland Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Will Grigg may have been on fire, but Northern Ireland were not. They were well organised and committed, but they were lacking at this level. Despite that, we shouldn’t forget how fantastic their last qualifying campaign was. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: Czech Republic vs Northern Ireland
Venue: Generali Arena
Kick off: Sunday 4th September, 7.45pm
Northern Ireland, or more specifically Will Grigg, was one of the biggest stories at the European Championship. Despite not seeing a minute of action, Wigan’s top goal scorer had his name sung throughout the tournament. Northern Ireland’s day in the sun has come and gone though, as it’s straight back down to the nitty gritty of qualifiers.
They dealt with a very tough group for them quite well topping Greece, Hungary and more impressively Romania but they face a tougher group this time around. With one less spot up for grabs, facing Germany and the Czech’s will be no easy task.
This game could go a long way to deciding who takes a qualifying spot with all three of Northern Ireland, Germany and Czech Republic set to make light work of Azerbaijan and San Marino, although Norway could be a surprise package.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
Czech Republic are 8/11 with Sky Bet. The draw is available at 13/5 with Bet365 and a Northern Ireland win is best odds 9/2. It’s a good price when you consider recent form.
Czech Republic’s price is one you can bet on if you really believe in the home team, but we should remember Northern Ireland’s defensive performances in their last qualifying campaign. And their price is valuable when we think back to their wins over Greece and Romania.
Iceland and Holland were beaten by the Czech’s here during their last campaign, but their indifferent form at the Euro’s shows they aren’t necessarily any more elite than the visitors. Northern Ireland kept surprising us during their last qualifying campaign, so why can’t they do it here. Back the visitors double chance at best odds 23/20 with Bet365 as our free betting tip.
As tight as they were in their last campaign, it’ll take some doing to hold the Czech’s scoreless here. I expect the hosts to get on the score sheet but the visitors do have a lot of character and they should never be out of this game. A 1-1 correct score is available at odds of 6/1 with Betfair and has received some backing.
The big man Kyle Lafferty was key during the last qualifying campaign and set pieces or crossing situations may be the visitors best chance here. He’s 4/1 with Ladbrokes to score at any point.
