Derby vs Newcastle Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Derby will welcome Newcastle in the televised game on Saturday evening, but the hosts will need to find their scoring boots against a side that have won their last four games now. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: Derby County vs Newcastle United
Venue: iPro Stadium
Kick off: Saturday 10th September, 5.30pm
Newcastle United have suddenly kicked in to having won four in a row. Any suggestion that they may struggle again this season were short lived after dropping points against Fulham and league leaders Huddersfield. They’ve allowed just one goal in four games and beat promotion hopefuls Brighton 2-0 last time out.
Derby find themselves closer to the foot of the table than the top of it. The Rams have struggled in front of goal this season, scoring just three goals in seven games. Their defensive displays have helped them earn five points still, but you fancy they’d need to score here to get anything.
The last time these sides met in the Championship it resulted in a surprising 3-0 home win. Newcastle haven’t won five games in a row since early 2014 in a run that saw them topple Man City and prior to that not since their last Championship campaign in 2010.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
Derby are best odds 9/5 with Coral which I don’t think is a price that reflects current form, but rather the expectation of Derby these days. The draw is available at 23/10 with Boylesports whilst Newcastle can be backed at 7/4 with Paddy Power. That seems good value.
I understand a bookmaker wouldn’t want to give too much away on Derby here, but surely they’ve offered a price on Newcastle that a lot of people will snap up. They’ve won four straight and already they’re showing signs that they can do what they did when they were last in the Championship.
Newcastle have a very deep squad full of quality players who have scored goals for fun at this level or captained a side to promotion from it, such as Ritchie, Shelvey, etc. Derby have looked very good in defence but it’s just as well, because something isn’t clicking up top. Newcastle to win is our free betting tip at 7/4 with Paddy Power.
A score we’ve seen feature in Derby games three times already this season is 1-0. County’s wins over Grimsby and Preston were achieved via that margin whilst they were 1-0 losers at Burton. They also drew 0-0 with Aston Villa here.Newcastle have now kept three straight clean sheets and saw out a tough game at Bristol City with a 1-0 win. Newcastle to win 1-0 is at 7/1 with Bet Victor.
Newcastle have found goals from all over the pitch so far and with the quality they have, they’ll do that all season. However this is expected to be a tight game and it may take a moment of magic to win it. Dwight Gayle seems most likely to produce it with four goals so far this season. You can back him to score at best odds 11/5 with Bet365.
