Sheffield Wednesday vs Wigan Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Two Yorkshire rivals will meet on Saturday afternoon when Sheffield Wednesday welcome Wigan. The hosts have been well below the standards they set last season but could find a fragile Wigan side just what they need to get back on track. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: Sheffield Wednesday vs Wigan Athletic
Venue: HIllsborough Stadium
Kick off: Saturday 10th September, 3pm
Wigan had made it all the way to the Premier League before suffering the same fate as so many others recently who suddenly found themselves in League One. They’ve bounced back to the Championship but they already seem to be finding the going tough. Top scorer Will Grigg has been in good form again with four goals, but Wigan have won just once this season.
A 3-0 home win over Blackburn in which Grigg netted twice summed up Blackburn’s troubles more than it did Wigan’s prospects, as the Latics have failed to win any other game. They lost out 4-3 to Nottingham Forest the last time they went on their travels and have lost all three away games, letting in eight goals.
Sheffield Wednesday have been a huge disappointment when you consider the standards they were setting, but I think they’ll rise up the table once things click. It doesn’t take much in football to swing things your way, and this could be the perfect fixture to get back on track.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
Wednesday are 10/11 favourites with William Hill which perhaps doesn’t appeal given the form of the teams, but I understand it. The draw is available to back at best odds 51/20 with Winner whilst a Wigan win is 15/4 at Coral.
It has been a slow start for both teams but it’s more about how you finish. It’s a very long season and losses to an extremely hard working Burton team and also local rivals Leeds United does not spell disaster. It’s disappointing on the day, but nothing more.
There have been suggestions that Wednesday’s problems run deeper than what happens on the pitch with the antics of Forestieri being well publicised a few weeks ago, but this is too good a squad, with too good a manager and fan base for this season to go too wrong. I think Wednesday will be back on track very soon and this is the perfect game to start. Sheffield Wednesday to win at odds of 10/11 with William Hill is our free betting tip.
Wigan have been sloppy at the back which makes Sheffield Wednesday an equally big threat whether they are on the attack or defending their box. Their counter attacking style is something Wigan could struggle with, which makes me think we’ll see goals here. Wednesday to win 3-1 is available at odds of 15/1 with Bet365.
Although Will Grigg is the man on form with four goals so far this season, I don’t want to buy in to Wigan too much here. I think this will be a tough game and I’d rather look to the hosts. Wednesday have four players on a single goal so far this season. Steven Fletcher is the only forward yet to get off the mark and could do so here at 2/1 with Stan James.
