Southampton vs Crystal Palace Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Southampton made a slow start to the season but has since bounced back, beating Sparta Prague and Swansea at home. Beating Sparta remains their only truly convincing performance of the season. Crystal Palace emphatically dispatched a struggling Stoke side on the weekend.
Game: Southampton vs Crystal Palace
Venue: St Marys Stadium
Kick Off: Wednesday 21st September, 7.45pm
Crystal Palace have moved to strengthen their front line considerably and failing to score enough goals last season. The Eagles were quite sturdy in defence on occasion, but didn't always take their chances. The addition of Benteke makes them a huge threat in the box, yet there was no sign of a striker on the score sheet as Palace registered four at the weekend.
Southampton can relate to that problem having struggled to put Swansea, Watford and Sunderland away in recent weeks, but did take five points from those three games as they managed to keep it tight at the back. I do think the nature of these teams will produce a tight game.
Crystal Palae have won here in cup competition in each of the last two seasons. Pardiola's men beat the Saints in two of three meetings last season, but did suffer a 4-1 defeat in the month of May as their season petered out.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
Southampton are best odds 21/20 with bookmaker Bet Victor. The draw can be backed at 11/4 with Betfred whilst the visitors, Palace, are offered up at a price of 3/1 with William Hill.
Not only did Palace manage their highest tally against a Premier League club since a 5-1 win over Newcastle a year ago, but they looked sturdy in defence too. It was only the third time Palace have scored 4 or more since returning to the top flight in 2013, and I think they may need more than just the one to leave with a win here.
Despite struggling to put teams away, Southampton have recorded a pair of 1-1 draws and a 1-0 win at home, which extends their good form at St Mary's. The Saints have lost just one of their last 15 in all competitions here and that was against Chelsea, 2-1. Although they finished the season strong, 18 of the last 35 premier league opposition to visit here in the league have taken at least a point home with them.
The above fact coupled with the fact this is a League Cup game and anything can happen, I believe Crystal Palace are the more attractive option here and offer more value. Back Crystal Palace or draw at 5/6 with Bet365.
Southampton haven't had a habit of playing out high scoring draws, and Palace aren't a goal scoring machine just because they've done it once. The Saints have played our a pair of 1-1 draws already at home this season. Back Southampton 1-1 Crystal Palace at best odds of 13/2 with William Hill.
I find that picking a goal scorer in a cup game can be a tough job, because you don't know who will start. The Saints have Europa League duties next week plus a game on Saturday and next Sunday, so it's a busy time for them. The Eagles will field a closer to full strength side I think, so Christian Benteke could feature. He hasn't got off the mark yet, but he's a natural scorer. Back the Belgian to score at odds of 23/10 with Ladbrokes.
