Burton Albion vs Liverpool Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Liverpool will be keen to bounce back after a disappointing weekend, but it won’t be all plane sailing at the Pirelli Stadium. Burton will have the opportunity to cause a shock, but Pool’s fringe players will hope to make a statement of their own. Below is our match predictions, betting tips and preview.
Game: Burton Albion vs Liverpool
Venue: Pirelli Stadium
Kick off: 7.45pm, Tuesday 23rd August
Burton will be hoping to add to the list of shocks caused in the first round when they host Liverpool in the League Cup on Tuesday evening. Albion may be able to call themselves a Championship side these days, but there’s still a world between these two teams. Burton though can take a lot from Burnley’s 2-0 win over Klopp’s men on the weekend.
Liverpool will be looking to make it through without too many issues but they won’t be willing to risk a full strength team to do so. A disappointing loss to Burnley on Saturday needs to be put behind them, but those players will probably have to wait until the weekend to do that.
Liverpool started the season well beating Arsenal 4-3 at the Emirates, but just two games in to the season and their defensive capabilities can be questioned already. Burton will know that feeling having allowed nine goals in 4 league games so far. Their first round game saw them overcome Bury, 3-2, with the help of extra time.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
Burton Albion can be backed at best odds of 17/2 with Boylesports. Liverpool are on offer at 4/11 with most bookmakers including Betfred, whilst the draw is best odds of 21/5 with Bet Victor.
It’s no surprise that before we even know what team Liverpool will field that they are clear favourites to win this game. History suggests that it won’t be easy with Liverpool having some first round struggles in the competition recently. Since Northampton eliminated them in 2010, the Reds have needed extra time or penalties to get past lower league opposition in Notts County, Carlisle and Boro’.
Burton have twice eliminated higher opposition at home but this will be their first every League Cup tie against a Premier League opposition. In fact, the rapidly rising former non-league club are only competing in their eight edition of the competition.
Burton probably won’t make many changes from to their starting line-up on Tuesday but in the same breath they don’t have much choice. With 22 senior players in their squad, no side can afford the rotations that a Premier League side can afford; at least not without sacrificing a lot of quality.
Liverpool have a rather large 35 man squad to pick from and they even have the luxury of making the likes of Benteke and Balotelli surplus to requirement. Stewart, Markovic, Alberto and Ings is just a snippet of the talented line-up Liverpool can fieldon Tuesday, which will most likely contain at least nine or 10 changes.
Given the gulf in class between the sides it’s hard to expect a shock. Any attempt to tip one may result in eventually getting on the right side of one, but it’s not an easy task. It’s usually easier to find an angle that involves Burton giving Liverpool a scare before the Premier League side eventually getting the job done, which is far more common in these games.
Given the sheer volume of goals in Albion games so far this season, I’d like our free betting tip to be Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams To Score at a price of 6/5 with Bet365. I think Liverpool will have the quality to eventually pull away from a Burton side who allow too many goals. Liverpool to win 3-1 is an attractive score line for me at best odds of 10/1 with Coral.
Danny Ings may find his opportunities limited this season, so he’ll do well to take them when he comes. He could be a likely scorer here and is worth considering at best odds of 23/20 with Betfair.
