Chelsea vs West Ham Betting tips and Match Predictions
Chelsea have been pretty dominant against West Ham over the past decade, but the Hammers fought back with a draw and a win last season. It ended a run of eight Chelsea wins in the past 10 meetings. Conte will be looking for his first Chelsea win here, but it won’t be easy. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: Chelsea vs West Ham
Venue: Stamford Bridge
Kick-off: 8pm, Monday 15th August
Antonio Conte has shown a lot of trust in the group of players he has inherited. With no real notable departures and only two additions, the Italian must believe he has something he can work with. Michy Batshuayi will provide a more dynamic option up top, whilst N’Golo Kante will sure up the midfield and give the likes of Hazard more of a license to roam.
West Ham’s biggest addition is obviously that of the Olympic stadium. The season started well for them as they overturned a first league defeat to reach the next stage of the Europa League, as they beat Domzale in front of 54,000 people. The same number saw them lose to 3-2 days later in its official opening.
West Ham continue to show some ambition on the pitch also as they’ve acquired the services of Sofiane Feghouli and Lanzini going forward, whilst fees were paid for Nordtveit and Masuaku, who will give the Hammers some added depth in defence.
The clubs have split their all-time meetings 38-19-34 narrowly in favour of the boys from Stamford Bridge.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
And its Chelsea who are favourites to add to their tally against the Hammers. They’re best odds 4/6 with Betfred to win at home on Monday, whilst the draw can be backed at 16/5 with Unibet. It’s hard to write off West Ham these days, and so they are still worth considering even at 5/1 with Betfred.
Although Chelsea have a new manager and a good squad on paper, let’s look at the reality of the situation. Fans are positive about Conte, but it won’t happen overnight. Chelsea won just five home games last season and there are still some question marks for me, such as their ageing defence. Conte’s back line at Juve were no spring chickens, but this is far from the tippy-tappy pace of Serie A.
Whenever Dimitri Payet is on the pitch you can expect West Ham to cause problems and create chances. You might expect to say the same about the likes of Hazard and co, but they were so hot and cold last season they have a lot more to prove to us than West Ham do at present.
Billic’s side started their away campaign by beating Liverpool, Arsenal and Man City on the spin last season and they also avoided defeat at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge, before holding United and Liverpool to further draws when playing away in the FA Cup. They’re not pushover.
The start of the season is always an unpredictable time and all we have to go on (mostly) are last season’s results and our personal opinion. Last season’s form speaks for its self, whilst I think Conte’s effect on Chelsea won’t be seen fully until September and perhaps even beyond. Chelsea have to hit the ground running, but there’s a lot to fix and I don’t see it being an instant fix, which is why West Ham +0.5AH is our free betting tip at odds of 11/8 with 888Sport.
It’s hard to pick a score here, because I think Conte will have done enough work that Chelsea will at least have the rigid mould of one of his teams. It
shouldn’t be a high scoring affair and I do expect a tight game, which is why I’ll try my luck at 1-1 at 7/1 with Bet365, but it’s
a lot harder to pick a scorer.
Andy Carroll has started the last three games and got on the scoresheet twice against Juventus. I think the big man will play here, and he did notch the last time the sides met, so I predict with Andy Carrol as our anytime goal scorer who is priced at 4/1 with Paddy Power.
