QPR vs Swindon Betting tips and Match Predictions

QPR surpassed our expectations on Sunday and now go in to their League Cup tie against Swindon with a lot of confidence. Momentum must be a big factor on such a short turnaround, but relegation favourites Swindon are coming to Loftus Road on the back of an impressive win themselves. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.

Game: QPR vs Swindon

Venue: Loftus Road

Kick-off: 1945pm, Wednesday 10th August

QPR got off to a flying start on Sunday as they made light work of Leeds United. Arguably the hosts did not turn up, and QPR did what any Championship side would do when afforded so much time, space and respect, but you can’t argue with a 3-0 win on the opening day.

Swindon can be pretty pleased with their own efforts as the League One side beat Coventry 1-0 at home. It was a strong performance from a side fancied by many as a relegation threatened side this season, but they’ve started their season in the right fashion at least.

The League Cup can be a tricky beast to tame for us bettors as you can expect to see some very different line-ups and differing attitudes that make it a level playing field. I’ve picked this game because I don’t think that’s so much the case here. I think QPR boss JFH will see the value in playing a strong side and keeping the momentum going here.

Swindon themselves have little choice but to field a similar squad. No side has less depth than Town themselves in the football league with signings badly needed before the window closes. Interestingly, Swindon have won six of their eight league cup away ties, including a 2-0 win at QPR in 2013.

Match Predictions and Betting Tips

With wins and clean sheets for both sides in their opening game these sides have nothing to lose here. The difference between going in to a midweek game on the back of a win or a loss is hugely different. Cup game or not, both sides will be wanting to use this as a springboard and make it two wins from two to start the season.

Although Leeds and Coventry are capable of better performances, you have to give QPR credit for the way they attacked Leeds. Polter was a key figure and has shown massive improvement since mid-last season, whilst Chery was too much for Diagouraga and Viera to handle. On that logic alone, a strong performance from QPR should be enough for them to get past a League One side.

The home side are betting favourites at best odds of 4/5 with Bet365. The draw is a price on the rise at the moment, but Sportingbet offer 14/5. The away side (not a likely winner in my opinion) can be backed at 4/1 with Bet365.

Ben might be glad to win

One person who may be particularly looking forward to the visit of Swindon Town is Ben Gladwin. The R’s new signing didn’t have the best of debuts on Sunday, as a host of rash challenges lead to him being substituted after an early yellow card. But the former Town employer will be relishing the chance to face his old club as will Massimo Luongo, who also plied his trade for the Robins recently. Gladwin and Luongo were two of the driving forces behind Swindon’s promotion push that saw them fall just short at Wembley 15 months ago, and visiting Town find themselves in a very different situation now. It’s been mostly downhill for the club since failing to reach the Championship back in May of 2015. Town have found themselves chopping and changing managers whilst dealing with financial troubles behind the scene. The club currently have a playing squad of just 21 players and that’s bound to have an impact in situations as this with rotation options slightly thin.

If history is anything to go by then Town do actually like going away in this competition, and some of these players will have fond memories of beating Stoke and QPR in this competition not that long ago. That was a very different (and successful team) and I predict the home side to set the tempo on Tuesday on route to another home win at a price of 4/5 with Bet365 as our betting tip. Whilst momentum will be important, I do expect the R’s team selection to differ slightly. Subs El Khayati and Connor Washington may get an opportunity in attack, and I expect the latter to take that chance after some good showings in pre-season. I predict Connor Washington is capable of getting on the score sheet at odds of 7/4 with Coral.

Finally, nine of the R’s last 10 home wins have involved them keeping a clean sheet. They gave nothing away against Leeds on Sunday as Smithies remained untested, and I think 2-0 is a reasonable score line prediction here, which can be backed at odds of 7/1 with Bet Victor.
