Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid Predictions, Betting Tips, Preview
The La Liga season will be well under way by the time Real Sociedad welcome Real Madrid on Sunday evening. This has not always been the happiest of hunting grounds for the team from the capital, so it should be a closely contested game. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid
Venue: San Sebastien
Kick-off: 7.15, Saturday 21st August
Real Madrid’s winning record has improved here recently having won on six of eight visits but going further back it’s been seven wins in 13. Sociedad have taken their fair share of the spoils, and even when Madrid have won, it’s often been tight. With the exception of a 4-0 win here two seasons ago, Madrid have only won by two or more goals on four of their 21 visits here. It took a Gareth Bale strike in the 80th minute to give them the points here last season.
In summary: don’t be a mug and pile on Madrid’s price, because this is a very, very tough place to come. Sociedad have claimed a 4-2 win and a 3-3 draw amidst Real’s last four trips here. Bookmakers are pricing Madrid at odds you don’t see too often and whilst it’s acceptable to ‘bet on odds you won’t get often’, you should still consider Madrid’s record here and the fact that it is early in the season.
Real began last season with a 0-0 draw away to Gijon and prior to that in 2014 only beat Cordoba 2-0 before losing their next two to Sociedad and Atletico. In 2013 Real began the season with three tightly contested one goal wins and a 2-2 draw with Villareal before they really sprung in to life and 2012 saw them saw them draw at home to Valencia before losing 2-1 in Getafe.
I really think if you’re going to catch either Real Madrid or Barcelona cold then the opening week or so of the season is the absolute best time to do it. They don’t drop many points, but Barcelona’s record on opening day is quite pedestrian, so this is when you can catch the big guns cold. And Sociedad will be prepared.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
The visitors Real Madrid are of course favourites at best odds of 3 /4 with Sky Bet and several others, whilst the hosts at 7/2 with Unibet to spring a surprise. The draw can be backed at 14/5 with Betfair and you can make a strong case for all three outcomes.
Sociedad have had a frantic pre-season of travelling where games have come thick and fast. The squad has often been broken up and everyone has featured, so I expect them to be very fit here. Sociedad played 10 pre-season games, going 6-2-2. Real have looked strong despite Ronaldo and others taking an extended rest after the Euro’s, and I think it might take a game or two for certain players to slot back in comfortably which is another thing that favours this being a close game.
Defensively Madrid have some work to do. Pre-season or not (and three wins or not) they have allowed seven goals in three games against Chelsea, Sevilla and Reims who managed three at the Bernabeu. Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t feature once again and although he should on Sunday, I don’t accept that ‘he should be this or that anyway’. Real have made some additions up top and they haven’t fully gelled them yet.
It’s very much what happens on the day here, but the fixture has a history of goals and you should never write the home side off. Madrid will take a few games to click in to gear this season I think, and Sociedad will get amongst the goals here. I’d like our free betting tip to be Over 2.5 and Both Teams Score at 21/20 with Coral.
As much as I’m more on the side of Sociedad here, it won’t surprise me to see Madrid nick a win. I do however think the best odds on offer for a goal scorer. I don’t care about Ronaldo’s odds here, 6/10 isn’t enough for me. 10/7 for Alvaro Morata looks a good price to me though as our any time scorer. I think the young man will be a 30 goal man for Madrid this year.
