Match Preview

Arsenal are one of the most spoilt clubs in the Premier League in terms of European football, with no side matching their consistency in reaching the Champions League every year since Arsene Wenger took charge. Thursday marks their first Europa League spell under Wenger as they welcome German side FC Koln.

Game: Arsenal vs FC Koln

Venue: Emirates Stadium

Kick-off: Thursday 15th September, 8.05PM

Arsenal have been a model of consistency over the past two decades. Despite invoking the wrath of fans for regular underperforming in the Premier League, the Gunners have always ensured Champions League football and have regularly competed well with the biggest names in Europe.

Last season was a first for Arsene Wenger who now prefers to take charge of his Arsenal side in the Europa League. The London club are understandably one of two strong favorites to lift the trophy just as Manchester United did, but FC Koln could provide a reality check of the challenge that awaits them.

Whilst the Gunners will be hopeful of taking all three points at home the visitors aren’t likely to make things easy, and the reverse fixtures has the look of one of the tougher ones in this years Europa League.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Arsenal are clear 1/3 favorites with Bet365 to win this game and the draw is available at 17/4 with Bet365 also. FC Koln can be backed at best odds of 8/1 with Betfred.

Despite the challenge that everyone knows FC Koln could pose, they’ve had a very poor start to the season which makes this the perfect time to face them for Arsenal. Even Bayern Munich can vouch for how tricky a team they can be to play against having only drawn 1-1 with them at home last season, and previously sneaking past them by just the solitary goal.

FC Koln also left Dortmund with a 0-0 draw last season but they’ve started poorly having lost all three games so far this year. The worry is perhaps that their fixture list hasn’t been that hard on paper, losing 3-1 to a Hamburg team they’d beaten 3-0 last season and struggling to even compete with Augsburg in a 3-0 loss.

This group has the ability to pose more of a threat to Arsenal than you might think on paper, but at the same time FC Koln look like the only side capable of laying a glove on Wenger’s men at the Emirates, and unfortunately they’re in terrible form early on in the season which could negate that.

Back our Free Betting Tip: Arsenal -1.5AH at odds of 1/1 with Paddy Power

In better form this FC Koln said would perhaps come here and play with a bit of confidence and cause Arsenal problems. With things as they are, it could be that their forays forward are few and far between, and their main aim for the first 60 minutes at least may just be staying in this game. Fewer sides are as patient as Arsenal and the goals should come eventually.

Back our Score Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 at 4/1 with Bet365

Arsenal may shuffle the pack with a big game against Chelsea to come on Sunday and Olivier Giroud, who remains a striker in recent weeks, may well get his chance to complete a full 90 minutes here. Giroud has a reasonable record in Europe having scored 13 goals in 33 games.

Back our Scorer Prediction: Olivier Giroud at odds of 10/11 with Betfred
