Barnsley vs Leeds United Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Both sides had a good December, but it’s visitors Leeds who have continued to build on that. Barnsley have been caught feeling sorry for themselves after recent transfer activity. Below are our match predictions, betting tips and preview.

Game: Barnsley vs Leeds United

Venue:Oakwell Stadium

Kick-off: Saturday 21st January, 5.30PM

Few teams were as good as Leeds United in the month of December, but Barnsley came close. The Tykes picked up four wins and a draw from their six games, which looked to be setting up this as a real cracking all Yorkshire affair.

Some unwanted transfer activity left the hosts with some lingering negativity going in to their 2-0 league loss to Fulham, which was followed by a cup defeat to League Two Blackpool. That said, many a Barnsley fan will tell you Fulham have been as good as anyone they’ve played this season.

Right up there alongside Leeds United – who have already beaten the hosts this season. None of those factors are likely to deter the hosts from pushing their neighbours all the way though, and this game could swing either way.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Despite being on home soil, Barnsley are underdogs at a price of 11/5 with Bet365 but that looks set to drop. The draw can be backed at 5/2 with Betfred, whilst Leeds are priced as a 13/10 shot with Betway.

As well as being a local affair, this is a particularly big game for both teams. Barnsley could find themselves as many as 10 points off of the playoffs, which could feel like a big gap. Leeds will be able to close the gap to Brighton and Newcastle to 3 and 4 points and won’t want to miss that opportunity.

Leeds winning 12 of their last 16 is the obvious trend here, but they have been beaten six times away from home this season. Perspective has changed with Barnley’s promising run turning in to one win in five, and just two in 11 at home. Back Leeds United -0.25AH at odds of 39/40 with Bet365.

Barnsley have played some real open games this season but five of their last eight have fallen under 2.5 goals and Leeds tend to keep things tight. They’ve allowed just three goals in seven games. Back Leeds United to win 1-0 at 7/1 with Bet Victor.

We feel like this could be a scrappy, closely contested game, so it’s going to take a moment of quality to settle it. Whilst Barnsley are capable, you’d be looking at the talent Leeds have going forward to be the ones to do it. Chris Wood is usually on the end of Leeds’ flowing wide play of late, so back Chris Wood to net at 11/10 with William Hill.
