Birmingham City vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Sheffield Wednesday may have sparked their season in to life midweek. Trailing 2-0 at half-time and facing a penalty with 10 men to go 3-1 down, they came back to beat Bristol City 3-2. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.

Game: Birmingham City vs Sheffield Wednesday
Venue: St Andrews
Kick off: Saturday 17th September, 5.30PM

Wednesday were trailing 2-0 after wide open defending and sloppy goalkeeping gave Tammy Abraham two goals midweek. They pulled one back early in the second half, but it looked like being one of those days when Lee Tomlin won a penalty for Bristol City and Sam Hutchinson was sent off. Such was the power in the miss, the ball rebound off the post all the way to the halfway line, when City’s Gary O’Neil saw red for a foul.

From that point Wednesday dominated and levelled with around 15 minutes to go. It looked like a deserved winner had passed them by until the fifth minute of injury time when the ball dropped for the Owls’ Kieran Lee in the box and he made no mistake. Slightly harsh on City, but Wednesday deserved at least a draw.

Birmingham’s season hasn’t been nearly as eventful as Sheffield Wednesday’s. They’ve quietly and consistently gone about their business. The Brummies aren’t a side tipped to do much this year, but they find themselves fifth in the early table. The only blip was a surprise home loss to Wolves.

Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Birmingham are 15/8 to win this game with William Hill. The odds seem harsh given City’s form so far. The draw is available at 23/10 with Bet Victor and to my surprise the visitors are favourites here. You can back them at 13/8 with Betstars.

I don’t agree with the odds on this game. Birmingham have been in much better form than their opponents here, and we know anyone can beat anyone early in the season. If you were to ask me about the table two or three months from now, then I certainly would expect Wednesday to be in a better position than Birmingham, but you can’t ignore the form book.

Wednesday may have won three of four at home, but it’s away from home where they’ve struggled the most. Two draws and a lose is what they’ve picked up in their first three league games, whilst Cambridge dumped them out of the League Cup in the first round. Back Birmingham City to win here at odds of 15/8 with William Hill. They seem too valuable given the form.

The noticeable thing about Birmingham this season is how strong they look in defence. That’s quite the change from previous seasons. A 3-0 win over Norwich is a very impressive thing to achieve, and the Blues have also kept out Cardiff, Reading and Fulham this season. I think Wednesday will have enough to score here, but it could be another very tight affair.1-0 is in the back of my mind, but it’s brave to say Wednesday won’t score. Birmingham to win 2-1 can be backed at 10/1 with Ladbrokes.

Clayton Donaldson has three goals so far this season and he’s on penalty duty for Birmingham. Wednesday have given away two so far this season. He’s 23/10 with Stan James.
