Match Preview

Saturday’s evening Premier League kickoff sees Chelsea and Liverpool meet for the second time in three days. Chelsea drew first blood with their 2-1 League Cup success on Wednesday, but that result will count for little as both Maurizio Sarri and Jurgen Klopp will revert to full-strength teams after their midweek shuffle.

Game: Chelsea vs Liverpool

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Kick-off: Saturday, 29th September, 5.30pm

After five league games, both teams boasted 100% records going into last weekend, but it was Chelsea who blinked first, failing to break down a resolute West Ham defence in their goalless draw. Since losing to Manchester City 2-0 at Wembley in the Community Shield curtain raiser, Chelsea had enjoyed five straight league wins, plus last week’s 1-0 win at PAOK in Greece to get their Europa League challenge off to a winning start.

Liverpool maintained their 100% start with their 3-0 home win over Southampton on Saturday, producing a reassuringly dominant performance only a few days after their dramatic stoppage-time 3-2 win over PSG in midweek. That Champions League success came only three days after they won 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley, as Liverpool passed their first real test against fellow title contenders.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Chelsea are rarely underdogs at Stamford Bridge, but that’s the way the bookies see it with best available odds around the 2/1 mark with Unibet, who also offer the draw at 13/5. With another even game in prospect, Liverpool are by no means odd-on favourites and Pinnacle have them priced at around 6/4 to extend their 100% start to the season.

Chelsea hit the ground running this season, scoring at least two goals in each of their opening five league games, until West Ham became only the second Premier League to keep a clean sheet against them since February. Only Bournemouth, in their surprise 3-0 win in January, have kept a clean sheet at Stamford Bridge in 2018, while this season the Blues have scored nine goals in their three home games.

Prior to their midweek defeat, Liverpool’s seven straight wins had seen them find the net seventeen times, and they have scored two goals in each of their three away wins to date. The last team to quell Liverpool’s attacking threat was, coincidentally, Chelsea, when the Reds lost last season’s corresponding fixture 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in May. Liverpool’s defence let in more goals in their opening game last season (3-3 at Watford) than they have conceded in their opening six games this time around (last season their opening six games saw them ship eleven goals).

It did not take long for Eden Hazard to prove his worth to the Chelsea line-up on Wednesday, when his introduction from the bench proved to be the difference, as his stunning winning goal illustrated. His hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Cardiff contributed to his tally of six goals in four starts and three cameo substitution appearances. With Pedro stepping up with three goals to complement the threat of Willian up front and with Marco Alonso given a free rein to be as busy going forward as he is defending, Sarri’s Chelsea seems to be much more adventurous than Antonio Conte’s did last season.

Liverpool’s attacking threat is arguably the most potent in the Premier League, with the triumvirate of Salah, Mane and Firmino continuing to terrorise defences, complemented by the return to form and fitness of Daniel Sturridge. With the additional midfield flair of Shaqiri and Keite, creative goal-scoring chances is not Jurgen Klopp’s problem – he will be more concerned a lack defensive strength in depth that was exposed on Wednesday by the absence of the influential Virgil van Dijk, whose partnership with Joe Gomez in the heart of the back line has been crucial in their successful start to the Premier League campaign.
