Honduras vs Australia Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview
Honduras were so hit and miss over the past 12 months but they pulled it together when it mattered the most. Being edged out by Japan holds no shame, but Australia’s level of performance has been below standard for a while.
Game: Honduras vs Australia
Venue: Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano
Kick-off: Friday, 10th November, 10.00PM
You’d think this is a competitive matchup on paper, but Honduras have found form in recent months whilst Australia have failed to impress against a number of weak sides in 2017. Their World Cup campaign has been much more consistent than Honduras’, but consistent draws against weaker sides were an issue.
Even against Syria in the last round Australia required a saving intervention from the ageing Tim Cahill and the help of a red card in their favour against Syria. Syria are resilient, but they’re very poor comparing to Honduras and the CONCACAF region. Honduras were sloppy in the first group stages, but warmed up and became harder to beat as the fifth qualifying round progressed.
They capped their qualifying campaign to date with a fantastic 3-2 win over Mexico, a result that ousted the United States and capped a run of four unbeaten in some tough games in Trinidad and Costa Rica, and at home the USA. Bar Trinidad, Honduras have come through tough tests against sides a far side better than Australia recently.
Honduras are favourites to win the home leg, but they are available at 11/10 through Bet365. The draw is available at odds of 23/10 with Boylesports and Australia are best odds 13/5 with Betfred to spring a surprise.
There’s no debating that despite recent form and the faults you can pick in Australia, Honduras can be erratic and inconsistent, and although better, you wouldn’t put them at the top of a list of teams you trust. But they do have more big game experience and they’ve faced tougher tests recently. You’d also say the core of this side are playing in a much more competitive league than most of the Australia's, Premier League company excluded.
The circumstances are also a big factor here. Some very good sides used to hostile atmospheres still seem to struggle in Honduras, and it’s the complete opposite of the glamorous surroundings that’ll await Honduras in Australia. This seems a very, very tough test for any WCQA side.

The intensity of both the atmosphere and the home side's game could combine to smoother Australia here. There’s no suggestion at all that this tie is beyond them, but the first leg doesn’t seem as winnable a game as the bookies odds suggest. Honduras will want to make the most of their first leg opportunity.
Back our Score Prediction: Honduras 2-0 at 7/1 with Paddy Power
The dynamic core of this side is MLS based. Alberth Elis and Rommel Quioto are in good form internationally and domestically, scoring a combined six goals in Honduras’ last five games. The pair have also had a big influence as MLS’ side Houston stunned title contenders Portland this week, and the former of the attacking pair has struck 15 times in 2017.
Back our Scorer Prediction: Alberth Elis to score at 12/5 with Bet365
