Manchester United Vs Wigan Athletic predictions, betting tips & Preview

Match Preview

Manchester United will play their second cup tie in the space of a few days here, and may field a weakened side with Hull taking priority. Below are our match predictions, betting tips and preview.

If you can make a case for Championship strugglers then it must be that Manchester United will prioritize their midweek tie with Hull. Although United lead 2-0, we expect the Reds to leave nothing to chance and field a strong team spearheaded by Ibrahimovic, which may force United into a weaker line up at the weekend.

When we say weakened, we should probably specify that such a team will still contain the likes of Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Anthony Martial potentially, so it’ll still be an extremely tough game for the visitors, who have already lost eight of 15 away this term.

United have been beaten once in 18 on this ground - by rivals City - and showed their class in beating one of the Championship’s better sides, Reading, 4-0 here. It could be a long afternoon for Wigan.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Backing Manchester United offers little value as they’re available at just 2/11 with Sky Bet. The draw can be backed at 6/1 with Matchbook whilst Wigan are a whopping 19/1 with Betfair to cause an upset.

It’s unlikely we see Wigan spring a surprise here and United’s demolition of Reading could be further evidence of that. The Reds rarely have trouble in the third or fourth round of the FA Cup either, but were beaten here by League One Leeds a few years ago.

Wigan have improved their away performances dramatically recently and have even picked up some clean sheets to go with their wins, but facing struggling Burton was the right fixture at the right time for Wigan. This is an uphill task, even if United’s best players sit this one out. Back Manchester United -2AH at 13/15 with Bet Victor.

The score line could depend entirely on how early United break Wigan down here. It’s going to be a case of attack against defence for the most part, and Wigan have been very leaky on the road. But if the Latics can get this tight early on, then they may keep it respectable enough. Back United to win 3-0 at odds of 13/2 with Bwin.

We are going to presume that Wayne Rooney is the most likely starter here with minutes increasingly harder to come by in the Premier League and League Cup, and he’ll be in good spirits after breaking Sir Bobby’s record last time out. Back Rooney to score at odds of 27/20 with 32Red.
