Newport County vs Leeds United Predictions, Betting Tips & Preview

Match Preview

Newport County and Leeds United have already met once this season when the Exiles gave United a short-lived scare at Elland Road. Leeds eventually ran out 5-1 winners.

Game: Newport County vs Leeds United

Venue: Rodney Parade

Kick-off: 12.00PM, Sunday 7th January

Championship sides have eliminated Newport County from the League Cup in each of the last five seasons, with the exiles failing to make it past the second round. Their pending fourth-round appearance here is the best domestic cup performance by County. They’ve yet to stun a team from the Championship or higher.

Leeds United have fallen foul to lower placed sides far too often. Hereford were 1-0 victors at Elland Road 10 years ago, before non-league Kettering took Leeds to extra-time. Since then, Leeds have lost on their travels to non-league sides Sutton and Histon, whilst also losing to League Two Rochdale.

Amidst that run of poor form against lower places sides, Leeds have oddly enough beaten Premier League sides Manchester United, Tottenham, Everton and Burnley whilst drawing with Tottenham and Arsenal. Newport County may be able to pray upon that inconsistency.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Newport County are a good price to spring a surprise at best odds 18/5 with Bet365, whilst the draw is available at 13/5 with Skybet. Leeds United continue to drift and are now as big as 5/6 with Unibet.

Newport County started the season in terrific form and were flying high in League Two, and the Welsh side managed to translate that form into their first-half performance at Elland Road. County were tough to break down and took the lead before a 20 minute Kemar Roofe hat-trick turned the game around.

Wins over Walsall and Southend in cup competition this season mean Newport have scored seven goals in four games against opposition from a higher league, and Leeds cup struggles on their travels suggest they may have to come through a few sticky moments in this game.

Back our Free Betting Tip: Both teams to score at 4/5 with Betfair

With a week until their next game, Leeds United are expected to field a strong side, although changes will still be made. Lasogga recent absence means the once German international should start at Rodney Parade, whilst Hadi Sacko may also offer a threat in tricky conditions. It won’t be easy for Leeds, but even a second string team should have the quality to win.

Back our Score Prediction: Leeds to win 2-1 at 7/1 with Betfred

Because Lasogga has been absent through a mix of injury and personal reasons, the big German deserves a run out here. It’ll be tough conditions, but the Leeds target man has played a part in eight goals in just 10 starts despite a disrupted season.

Back our Scorer Prediction: Pierre-Michel Lasogga to score at 17/10 with Bet365
