Portsmouth vs Rotherham United Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Match Preview

Portsmouth host Rotherham United in League One’s sole game on Sunday after Fleetwood game with Blackburn was postponed due to international involvements. Rotherham have looked every bit as poor away as they did last season.

Game: Portsmouth vs Rotherham

Venue: Fratton Park

Kick-off: Sunday, 3rd September, 2.30PM

Portsmouth and Rotherham were separated by two divisions last season, although Rotherham’s consistently poor form leave them rarely more than 30 places ahead of promotion chasing Portsmouth in the Football League standings.

Rotherham have picked up this season where they left off the last with three defeats in four and problems away from home. All three of the Millers away games have resulted in defeat so far, and even their respectable 2-1 loss to Huddersfield demonstrated how it only takes them a few minutes to fall apart.

Portsmouth will be pleased with how they’ve adjusted to life in League One with each passing game. Only Oxford have got the better of Pompey so far after four tricky games to start the season, and there must be more to come yet from the Fratton Park side.

Reasons for Betting Tips

Portsmouth are favourites at 23/20 with Bet Victor whilst the draw can be backed at 12/5 with Coral. Despite finding themselves a league lower, Rotherham’s away form does not make odds of 5/2 with Bet365 at all tempting.

Portsmouth have beaten Rochdale at home and held Walsall to a 1-1 draw. The Saddlers were resilient on their travels at times last season, avoiding defeat in 15 of 23 away games. Rochdale were also a good measure of Portsmouth capabilities against a potential playoff chasing side, and their games so far have shown they’re likely to be strongest at home.

Rotherham’s five goal outburst against Southend was seen as a potential warning to the rest of the league from the Yorkshire side that gained promotion playing rather attractive and attacking football during their last League One spell, but their 2-0 loss at home to Charlton shortly after shows they perhaps aren’t shaping up to be a contender.

Back our Free Betting Tip: Back Portsmouth to win at 23/20 with Bet365

Portsmouth sole win so far this season came with a clean sheet at home to Rochdale and the hosts managed to win . Rotherham have scored in two of three away games so far this season but were shut out by Fleetwood in a 2-0 loss. Last season the Millers were beaten without scoring 11 times on their travels and they could struggle here on Sunday.

Back our Score Prediction: Portsmouth to win 2-0 at 8/1 with Bet365

Brett Pittman should be lethal with the right service given his reasonable goal scoring record in the Championship and years of League One and Two experience that saw him score 79 goals in 199 appearances. Pittman has already started life at Portsmouth with three goals in four games so far.
