Slovenia vs Scotland Predictions, Betting Tips & Preview
Gordon Strachan’s Scotland side showed their fighting spirit once again on Thursday, as they recorded one of the most crucial results of recent Scottish football history. Now the tartan army are closer than ever to their first World Cup in two decades.
Game: Slovenia vs Scotland
Venue: Stadion Stozice
Kick-off: Sunday 8th October, 5PM
Slovenia were crushed by a 95th minute Harry Kane goal at Wembley on Thursday evening. England couldn’t have been much worse, and a draw was enough to see them through. The loss has dire implications for Slovenia and manager Katanec, who can expect a P45 if he fails to win here.
Scotland have fought back from the brink with four wins and a draw in their last five games, good enough form to keep pace with England in the form table. The Scots needed a red card and an injury-time goal to give them a helping hand, but a win's a win and their fighting spirit has seen them go second in the group.
Awaiting them in Ljubljana is an unforgiving task, as Slovenia have lost only three times in 17 home games. They’ve allowed just seven goals in that time, and six of those came in their three losses against England, Turkey and Colombia. Scotland toppled Slovenia at home, but their away form has been very different.
Scotland faces an uphill task when they travel to Slovenia needing a win on Sunday, and the hosts are favored at odds of 6/5 with Betfred. The draw can be backed at 11/5 with Unibet, and Scotland are best odds 2/1 with Paddy Power.
Germany, England, Belgium, Wales and Spain are the five teams that have managed to win at Hampden in Scotland’s last 30 home games, so it’s no surprise that Slovenia left here empty-handed. But in that game much like at Wembley on Thursday, the blueprints were there for all to see.
Katanec men are underwhelming going forward but they aren’t without a threat and their defensive organisation will present a very big challenge for Scotland, who look a different side away from home. Despite beating Lithuania and Malta, they were trounced 3-0 by both superior sides in Slovakia and England.
Back our Free Betting Tip: Slovenia: Win to nil at 5/2 with Betfred
If Scotland win, they’re guaranteed second. Slovenia must win this game, but they’ll need Malta to pull off the shock of the qualification phase with a win in Slovakia. Even if Slovenia had held England, it wouldn’t have kept them in second. This is likely to be a scrappy affair, but Slovenia have to approach it in the right way and they’ll likely want to ruin Scotland’s chances.
Back our Score Prediction: Slovenia 1-0 at best odds 5/1 with Betfred
Bar an offside missed by the linesman, Slovenia never looked like scoring in 180 minutes. Joe Hart was England’s man of the match by virtue of how awful the 10 in front of him were. Slovenia have had a range of scorers this qualification, but Ilicic is on set piece duty and has three in his last two home qualifiers.
