Cambridge vs Sheffield Wednesday Betting tips and Match Predictions

It took a late goal off of a goalkeeping error for Wednesday to secure a much deserved win over Villa on Sunday, but they all count. They could have an equally tough time breaking down a resilient Cambridge side who drew 1-1 with Barnet on Saturday. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.

Game: Cambridge United vs Sheffield Wednesday

Venue: Abbey Stadium

Kick-off: 1945pm, Tuesday 9th August

New signing Pierre Mingoia got his United career off to a flying start when he handed Cambridge a 61st minute lead on Saturday, although they were denied a win in a 1-1 draw with Barnet. They remain at home for Tuesday’s game as the welcome Championship promotion hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday.

Wednesday beat Aston Villa 1-0 on Saturday afternoon and you can’t say it wasn’t deserved. Although their opponents grew in to the game during a half hour spell in the second half, Wednesday were the side asking most of the questions. Fernando Foresteri may be left on the subs bench with Championship games coming thick and fast early in the season, but Wednesday have no shortage of talented replacements with Gary Hooper and Adthe Nuhiu potential starters on Tuesday.

This will be the first competitive meetings between the once Premier League contenders and ex National league side.

Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Sheffield Wednesday are natural betting favourites to win this game but their rising odds are now approaching even money. That to me seems surprising giving the attacking talent they have. We all know how tricky these League Cup games can be, but Wednesday strike me as a said that shouldn’t get caught with their pants down.

Cambridge will have different ideas and viewers may remember the U’s held United to a goalless draw here in the FA Cup fourth round before losing the replay 3-0. In their short football league history, Cambridge are yet to win a League Cup tie having been eliminated at the 1st round stage in 2004, 2014 and 2015.

The visiting side are betting favourites at best odds of 19/20 with Sportingbet and I feel a worthy betting tip. The draw is offered at 14/5 by Bet365. The home side can be backed at 10/3 with Paddy Power.

Wednesday will win with width

Inevitably Cambridge are going to look to get narrow and defend at times against Wednesday, and that will limit counter attacking opportunities that the visitors are so fond off. You would still expect the Championship side to find a way to take the game to the hosts, and that will require good width. If Wednesday can make the pitch nice and wide, they have the quality and the tempo to pull the home side about.

Hunt and Pudil are no certainty to start here after playing 90 minutes on the weekend but are two of the best attacking full backs outside the Premier League, and their link up play with Abdi and Wallace is the key to victory here. If those dynamic duos are working in tandem out wide, there’s simply no chance that a League Two defence can hold out against such quality for 90 minutes. Luckily for the hosts Carlos Carvahal may well choose to rotate his side. The bad news is that would mean the introduction of Palmer, Jeremy Helan and Lucas Joao. Wednesday have a lot of quality that they can deploy in wide areas. Making the pitch wide and splitting the Cambridge back line is the key to victory, and I expect Wednesday to find ways to do that. Our betting tip is an away win at a price of 19/20 with Sportingbet.

With Nuhiu and both likely to feature at some stage, the United centre backs can expect to have their hands full. With Nuhiu’s size and quality, you’d expect the big man to be amongst the chances against a League two side and you can back him to score at odds of 7/4 with Coral.

Wednesday kept things tight on the weekend and they may have to be patient if they wish to break down Cambridge on Tuesday, but when they do, the gaps for more goals should appear and I predict Sheffield Wednesday will come through this game easier than most might think and you can back them to win 3-0 at odds of 7/1 with Bet Victor.
