DC United vs New York Red Bulls Predictions, Betting tips and Preview
There’s a big clash between two rivals in Major League Soccer on Sunday evening as DC United welcome New York Red Bulls. There will be more than a few names on show you should recognise and we can expect an entertaining encounter. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: DC United vs New York Red Bulls
Venue: Robert F Kennedy Stadium
Kick-off: 8pm, Sunday 21st August
You may not have watched MLS, but you’ve probably heard some of the following: ‘It’s not as good as the Premier League’ and ‘It’s a retirement home’. The latter is not true with the majority of the league young players developed locally and under the age of 25, and what is as good as the Premier League?
MLS is ranked inside the top 10 leagues in the world and I would argue if it wasn’t for the likes of Club America in Mexico and Ajax/PSV in Holland, it would be a few places higher. There’s no shortage of Internationals, good fan bases and entertaining performing. But most importantly to me? Whilst everyone continues to ignore it, I continue to make more and more money on a niche league with steady odds.
What makes it such a unique league is the parity. DC United have bounced between finishing top of the table and then bottom of the table for several seasons. Teams like LA and New York remain fairly consistent, but money doesn’t dominate and there’s even an allocation system for new players to the league that makes sure equally weighted as clubs continue to grow.
The Red Bulls are without a doubt a force in this year’s league again though as they continue to chase down local rivals and Pirlo, Villa and Lampard and co at the top of the table. DC are for once not having an all or nothing season, as they currently sit sixth in the table occupying the final playoff place. They are only there on goal difference ahead of Kaka’s Orlando City, and this is a huge game for them.
Let’s take a look at the betting odds for this one.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
This game has perhaps been priced on overall form, which is a danger to take too seriously when betting MLS. New York Red Bulls are favourites at 6/4 with Stan James whilst the hosts can be backed at 9/5 with Bet Victor. The draw is available at 23/10 with Unibet.
I think the odds are very, very wrong. And if you happen to know my long standing and fairly popular MLS service, you’ll know I’m not too often wrong! I don’t see New York winning this game at all. They’re managed four draws in a row on their travels, but that’s as good as the season has got for them.
DC United are now unbeaten in five home games after exchanging a lose followed by a win through their first eight. New York are now winless away in seven games. They’ve only triumphed once on the road through 16 games and that was an extremely odd 7-0 win against New York City.
The Red Bulls travelled to San Salvador to face El Salvador midweek and they played a strong line-up. US International Klejstan played a part as did new striker, Israeli international Omer Damari. Aurellien Collin and Luis Robles also featured meaning the Red Bulls did opt to use several starters who now have a long journey home and just a few days before their meeting with DC.
This will be New York’s sixth game in 20 days this month, whilst DC are on a roll at home and about to play just their third game since 27th of July. They should be fresh and they’re in better form, so I think their odds to be brave. Our free betting tip is DC United 0AH at 1/1 with Stan James. I think the hosts will pinch a 2-1 win which is priced at 8/1 with Betfred.
It’s hard to pinpoint a scorer. No one is prolific for DC. United have had eight different scorers in their last five home games with centre back Steve Birnbaum scoring in back to back games. Alvaro Sabario is the top scorer with three despite the fact DC have scored 26 goals this season. The Red Bulls could be tired and may alter the line-up a bit after their midweek game, which makes it tough there to. Wright-Phillips has 14 this season but only four on his travels.
In the end I’ve gone for Lloyd Sam. The former Leeds United and NY Red Bulls player has been proactive for DC and I’m sure he would love a goal against his old club. I think Lloyd Sam might bag himself a goal at 4/1 with Bet365.
