Derby County vs Aston Villa Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

Aston Villa and Derby will meet at the iPro here in a Premier League fixture from yesteryear. Villa still aren’t convincing and I maintain they haven’t hit rock bottom yet. Both sides currently sit on four points. Below are our match predictions, betting tips and preview.

Game: Derby County vs Aston Villa
Venue: iPro Stadium
Kick-off: 5.30pm, Saturday 20th August

County have yet to concede a goal at home this season, holding league leaders Brighton to a 0-0 draw and beating Grimsby 1-0 in the League Cup. The Rams bounced back from their weekend defeat to Barnsley well in midweek, as they toppled Preston 1-0 to keep their third clean sheet of the season.

Aston Villa showed that even in the Championship they’re more than capable of self-destructing. They looked comfortable against Huddersfield until a goalkeeping hollower gave the visitors a point with four minutes to go. Villa’s keeper has cost them four points this season by my count.

It does look like the Villains are more likely to be a threat at home than away this season but a 3-0 win against Rotherham should fool no-one. Brighton matched that score line without getting out of second gear this evening, meaning the Millers are winless having allowed 13 goals in four games. Basically, they’re terrible and Villa’s only win came against a relegated side in waiting.

Derby’s defence has been mean this season. We saw in their trip to Wednesday that Villa can lack ideas as they failed to make their possession dominance at times count, and I believe we could see more of the same here.

Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Derby are 5/4 best odds with Betfred although many bookmakers are now quoting them at even money exactly. The draw can be backed 12/5 with Bet Victor whilst Aston Villa are available at 11/4 with Bet365.

As I’ve said above I do still think the worst is yet to come for Villa. I don’t know how such an unstable character can be entrusted with returning the stability of a football club this big. Naturally some bridges have been built between the club and its fans. And the Villa faithful have responded to the passion shown by new signings such as Elphick and McCormack.

But there are still some pieces that need shifting and there are some players who have yet to settle in properly. Most notably Villa’s new keeper, who has now handed their opponents two crucial goals in three league games.

The way Villa played and defended against Luton also was worse than just a club suffering a cup shock. It was clueless, it lacked passion and it re-enforced my opinion that there is still deadwood at the club. Like Okore.

Derby haven’t been free scoring as of yet but they are looking water tight at the back and it’s only a matter of time before their strikers start scoring. Chris Martin has been playing well but is yet to find the net, and I feel he’s coming a step closer to scoring with each game he plays.

That’s why Martin is my anytime goal scorer prediction here at 23/20 with William Hill. Given that we do expect a very tight game given Derby’s defensive exploits and having seen Villa dig in away to Wednesday, I have to go with a low scoring prediction here for my correct score suggestion. I fancy Derby to win 1-0 at 6/1 with Bet365.

That leads us in to our free betting tip for this game. It makes sense to me to back Derby at best odds of 5/4 with Betfred.
