Early Cheltenham Gold Cup Favourites

While there is still time before the start of Cheltenham Festival, the list of contenders to win the presigious Cheltenham Gold Cup is becoming more clearly defined. With some elite horses leading the pack of contenders and attempting to go down in racing history with a win, it's worth taking a look at the favourites to win the race now to see if there is any value at the top of the Gold Cup odds list.

Presenting Percy

Form is so important when handicapping horse racing, seeing as you can't ask a horse how they are feeling leading up to a big race. Instead, all you have to go off of is how they look in training and what they have done when faced with competition. And for that reason, Presenting Percy is a worthy favourite for the 2019 Gold Cup.

In his last five races, Presenting Percy has finished in first place four times and in second place once dating back to 2017. Among those wins was a seven-length victory at last year's Cheltenham Festival, a convincing win after coming in at 11/4 odds. This year, the Patrick G. Kelly trained horse should enter the Gold Cup at around similar odds and could be a real threat to win the race.

Native River

Winning back-to-back Gold Cups is an extremely difficult feat, with only six horses in the history of the race ever pulling off the feat. Of those six horses, only one was able to pull it off after 1980, when Best Mate won three straight Gold Cups from 2002 to 2004. For Native River, this Cheltenham Gold Cup is a chance to go straight into the history books, as he has a shot at becoming one of two modern horses to win the race twice in a row.

With that said, Native River will have a target on his back as a result of that success. Teams will be looking to move Native River out of the preferred positions on the track to make sure he can't lead for the bulk of the race like he did in 2018, which could torpedo his chances. And given that the last year's winner tends to have less favourable odds, there isn't much value in this horse either. That is a big reason why Cheltenham Gold Cup tips from Betfair seem to prefer longshots over Native River.

There are some other horses who appear to be threats for this year's Gold Cup. Kemboy and Clan des Obeaux are the third and fourth favourites to win the race, before a gap in the race odds begins to appear before the rest of the field. Of course, in a race like the Gold Cup, there is plenty of room for error for a longshot to sneak in and grab the race. But in order to do that, a horse is going to have to outperform two horses that have separated themselves from the field, one of which is on torrid form and the other has the experience of having won this very race.
