Man City vs Sunderland Betting tips, Match Predictions and Goalscorer Bets
Manchester City will play their first game under Pep Guardiola when they welcome David Moyes’ Sunderland side on Saturday evening. Given the way his time at United panned out, Moyes may receive a similar welcome to Pep. Ironically, of course. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.
Game: Manchester City vs Sunderland
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Kick-off: 5.30pm, Saturday 13th August
Manchester City fans should afford Pep Guardiola and his side a fantastic ovation on Saturday evening, but it’s important everyone at City doesn’t get
caught up in the moment. City have no doubt tied down one of the best coaches in the world, and he’s made some fantastic addition. But Sunderland have
their own plans and will no doubt take the lessons that Big Sam has taught them.
Although I do worry about Sunderland’s prospects this season, I do think they can start on a positive note. Big Sam taught them to fight and tightened up their defence, and I think we will still see glimpses of his handprints on this team in the earlier part of the season. David Moyes will of course have his own ideas he is trying to implement and the Black Cats have responded well during pre-season.
Sunderland finished with draws on their travels against Montpellier and Dortmund after beating four lesser teams, albeit having to overcome a scare or two in a 3-2 win over Dijon. As pre-season has progressed, Sunderland have certainly looked more like a unit from the highlights I’ve seen, so it shouldn’t be a straight forward romp at the Etihad.
Match Predictions and Betting Tips
Manchester City are 1/5 favourites with Sky Bet, whilst the draw is best odds of 5/1 with Boylesports whilst visitors Sunderland are being priced as high as 14/1 with Bet Victor. It’s more than fair to expect a home win here, and City have won their last four meetings with the Black Cats, but I don’t think it will be all plain sailing.
Sunderland found the back of the net in 13 of their last 14 away games in the Premier League. That’s a run which included trips to Arsenal, City, United,
Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool. West Ham were the only side to shut them out, but prior to that Sunderland showed the character to fight back from
2-0 down to draw at Anfield.
And their scoring record against City, despite losing the last four, is reasonable. Looking at Sunderland’s last six trips to the Etihad Stadium, the history books will show they’ve managed a very respectable nine goals against the Citizens. Last seasons 4-1 beating makes them feel a lot more distance, but Sunderland had managed 3-2 and 2-2 scorelines against City prior to that. Whatever the end result they always seem to score and cause City problems. We also have to consider Pep is still working on City and their shape, and there will be mistakes early in the season.
Don’t write Sunderland off entirely. I think they’ll get on the score sheet here, so our free betting tip is Both Teams to Score at best odds of 21/20 with Boylesports. In
the same breath I should say I do expect City to eventually have far too much quality, but I don’t expect it to be all plain sailing. Sunderland will
have their moment even if City do have the last laugh.
Despite some much improved defensive showings late last season (and during pre-season) I still think City will have their way in-front of goal here. Where there’s goals, there’s Aguero. The little Argentinian is only best odds of 6/10 with William Hill here, but he’s an obvious choice in the goal scorer department, so I predict that he’ll get on the score sheet here.
