Manchester United vs Southampton Preview, Prediction and Betting Tips

The core of what was an extremely talented Southampton side is now nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, United are plotting their rise back to the top and opened their campaign with a 3-1 win over Bournemouth. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.

Game: Manchester United vs Southampton

Venue: Old Trafford

Kick off: 7.45

United began the campaign in fine fashion. They successfully navigated what could have been a tricky trip to the coast in Jose’s first game in charge. United looked quite comfortable throughout the game defensively and found extra gears in attack as the game went on. Rooney, Zlatan and Mata got on the score sheet for the Reds.

It took a Nathan Redmond volley to earn Southampton a 1-1 draw in their opening fixture with Watford. The Saints then played the final 20 minutes against 10 men but never really looked like finding the breakthrough. Southampton were guilty of playing as if Pelle was still present, and the ball came back far too often.

United were far too easy to beat at home last season but you feel under Jose they must have a chance of making this place a real fortress again. Both sides won away from home in this fixture last season, but I can’t imagine we’ll see a repeat here with Southampton looking like a potential struggler.

Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Manchester United are very short at best odds of 4/9 with Bet365. They’re not necessarily odds you want to back, but I do agree with them. The draw is available at 7/2 with Bet Victor, whilst Paddy Power offer 15/2 for an away win.

Things have changed a lot since Southampton’s rise back towards the top which saw them competing for a place in Europe last season. Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Pelle, Morgan Schneiderlin and Saido Mane is just a snippet of the talent Southampton have lost over the past year, with Jose Fonte now set for the exit also.

Manchester United instead been adding to their ranks with the addition of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eric Bailly. They may need more come January if they’re really going to challenge for the title, but the early signs are that Jose will get the best out of this group of players.

Juan Mata in particular stood out on the weekend as he opened the scoring to set United on their way. The Spaniard didn’t receive glowing reviews last year but Mourinho should get the best out of the former Chelsea man.

But the star of the show was obvious. It’s the man who will be the star of the show every week. I think Zlatan has already proved that he will fit right in, and we’ve seen glimpses of the same outrageous ability already, with an overhead back heel springing Wayne Rooney for a one on one that Boruc smartly saved.

But in the end; Zlatan found a way to grab the headlines. It was always going to happen. We’ve successfully backed the big Man to score a few games in a row now and he’s delivered, so let’s show faith again.

This is an equally big game as he will want his first goal at Old Trafford. Back Zlatan to score at best odds of 23/20 with Betfair.

I haven’t mentioned Southampton much here because I don’t think this game is about them. It’s what United will do that decides it. I think they’ll be far too strong at home and I do worry for Southampton and the direction they’re heading. I’m not quite suggesting the R word but that seems more likely than the E word (Europe) at the moment.

I don’t think United will have problems here so our free betting tip is Manchester United -1AH at a price of 11/14 with Bet Victor. I don’t see them dropping points, so we should at least get our money back. I’ll chance my luck at a correct score prediction of Man Utd 2, Southampton 0. You can bet on that 6/1 with Bet365.
