Monday - Day 1

COURT FRONTIER-Christian Williams

Taunton 4.30pm 3m 4 1/2f (Class 5) Handicap Chase (Soft0

Monday 26th March 2018

Recommended 5 Pt E/W @ 8/1 generally available.

Winner of a couple of Pt-Pt’s in Soft Ground, Court Frontier moved from Conor O’Dwyer to Alan Fleming for whom he won a Hunters Chase at Downpatrick and a Fairyhouse Handicap Hurdle by 22 lengths in Heavy Ground. He later moved to Paul Morgan for whom he was cleverly placed to pick up a Handicap Chase off 110, then a Handicap Hurdle off the same mark, before being upped in distance to win a Huntingdon Handicap Chase over 3m 6 ½ f by 14 lengths off a mark of 123. Although it is recorded he moved again, from Paul Morgan to Christian Williams, this is not strictly true as Christian did the bulk of the training for Paul Morgan whilst he awaited his Full Time Trainers License to come through. As I understand it Christian has recently moved from Dai Walters’ (Owner of Ffos Las Racecourse) establishment in Cardiff back to his Father’s Farm near Bridgend, which has been developed specifically for Christian to train his Race Horses. Hopefully, now he has settled in, we will see the benefits of his move with some winners from his new Training Yard.

Court Frontiers’s most recent run, over 3m 2 1/2f in heavy ground at Wincanton was very encouraging, given the 3rd placed horse, Dawson City, won next time off a mark of 127, which is the same mark Court Frontier runs off today. Court Frontier was only a head behind Dawson City, who is now rated 133 over Fences.

I strongly believe Court Frontier is great Each Way Value to at least run into a place with 8 runners currently engaged.

*NOTE

It would be no surprise to see Caviar D’Allen , also trained by Christian Willams, go close in the earlier race at Taunton, 3.25pm, although I feel Cap Du Nord, his other runner at the meeting is being prepared for another day.

Tuesday - Day 2

Today’s selection is….

BAL DE RIO-Brian Ellison

Newcastle 5.40pm 2m 1/2f (0-75) Class 5 Handicap (Tapeta)

Tuesday 27th March 2018

The best of these over hurdles would be Western Way, who won a Bumper and on the A/W at Kempton off a mark of 65. He could be a player, as we can draw a line through his last run when he failed to act at Southwell’s Fibresand but I feel his current mark of 73 leaves him vulnerable.

Another one for consideration and the likely favourite is Volpene Jelois. Paul Nicholls does exceptionally well with his A/W runners and he won well at Kempton in a Jumpers Bumper benefitting from a good tactical ride from his 7lb the home straight, whilst Noel Fehily (On Shall We Go) got caught on heels at the the rear before closing the gap at the line to around 4 lengths! This probably suggests Volpone Jelois could be flattered by the win. He was also getting half a stone from the runner up and 3rd placed horse and it was a race restricted to horses who had run over Hurdles but had not won a Class 1, 2 or 3 since 2015!

Bal De Rio has been Runner-up four times and third in five runs over hurdles and is currently rated 119 over hurdles. *NOTE Western Way is Rated 122 Over Hurdles & Volpone Jelois is Rated 117.

Trainer Brian Ellison commented (Attheraces Stable Tour back in January)…..”Bal De Rio has run five times and been placed every time. He has been unlucky really and will win his races over hurdles and will win on the Flat too. He is a good sound horse……”

Bal De Rio has raced against Volpone Jelois in France back in August 2016, where Volpone Jelois beat Bal De Rio into 3rdplace by 1 ½ lengths but Bal De Rio was giving the winner 12 lbs over the 1m 7f trip on Turf. I feel Bal De Rio can go really well here off a workable mark of 70.

Recommended 2Pt win @ 11/2 with PaddyPower

Wednesday - Day 3

Apache Song-James Eustace

Wincanton 3.05pm 1m 7 ½ f (Class 3) 0-125 Mares Handicap Hurdle

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Recommended 2Pt E/W @ 8/1 in places

A maiden on the level for Rod Millman, Apache Song joined James Eustace for a Hurdling campaign, for whom they picked up a Novice Hurdle at Market Rasen on Good Ground. He finished a well beaten 6th at Kempton a couple of outings later but that race has the look of a very hot contest! Kayf Grace (Nicky Henderson) was the winner giving plenty of weight all round and Apache Song was 18 lengths adrift. Kayf Grace was thought good enough to contest The Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham’s Festival but fell and is probably a good bit better than her current mark somewhere in the mid 130’s. Azzerti was 9 ½ lengths adrift of the winner in 3rd at Kempton and has since won off 127 and is currently rated 136. The horse who finished 5th, Unison was only a length and a half in front of Apache Song and that horse has won his last 2 races off 135 & 140 and is currently rated 1461! Even Maquisard, who was a further 24 lengths behind (Apache Song) in 8th, won yesterday at Huntingdon admittedly off a 10 lb lower mark.

Apache Song pulled very hard for the entire first circuit that day so did well to hang in there up the home straight having come off the bridle and dropped to the rear, so the run could be upgraded in my view. Next time, back in calmer waters, in a 6 runner contest at Sedgefield, she was travelling best when the favourite fell in front of her and she was brought down at the 3rd last.

This is what her trainer had to say in his stable blog…….

“APACHE SONG heads West tomorrow to run in a 2 mile mare only handicap hurdle at Wincanton. There are 8 runners and Trevor Whelan takes the ride. She was very unlucky last time out at Towcester as she was travelling well when she was brought down 3 flights from home by the favourite. Luckily she came out of the race unscathed and has schooled well at home since then. It was heavy ground that day and she was travelling well so she should handle the soft ground tomorrow. We have been waiting to run her in the right race and this contest looks ideal for her so we are hopeful that she will run a big race.”

Thursday - Day 4

No Tips

Friday - Day 5

TONY CURTIS-Richard Hannon

Bath 4.00pm 1m (Class 2) Handicap (Soft)

Friday 30th March 2018

Recommended 2 Pt Win @ 5/2 Generally

I have to say I was very impressed with Tony Curtis in last year’s Goodwood Festival. He ran in The Betfred Mile off a mark of 102 and just failed to get up, in what was a rough race. He pulled hard for much of the race and was in the middle of the pack where there was a fair bit of bumping and barging going on. As they turned for home he had to sit and suffer but flew as soon as he saw daylight in the manner of a very good one. The winner, Master Of The World, got first run and snuck up the inside under an inspired ride from Ryan Moore. Master Of The World recently was awarded The Winter Derby at Lingfield in The Stewards Room. Tony Curtis has not run since, as he picked up an injury at Goodwood but I understand he has been working well at The Hannon’s.

It is interesting Tom Segal (Pricewise) chose Tony Curtis as his horse to follow in Richard Hannon’s recent Stable Tour. This is what he had to say…………

“Tony Curtis hasn’t won since his 2 year old days but he ran really well in 2 of the best handicaps in Britain last season and with better luck he might have won The Betfred Mile at Goodwood instead of finishing second. The Handicapper raised him a couple of lbs for that but he’s still relatively unexposed for his age and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet. Anything between 1m and 1m 2f suits him best with give under foot and he might be one for The Royal Hunt Cup”

The Stable won this race last year with Oh This Is Us and I feel sure they will have Tony Curtis primed for another tilt at this race.

Good Luck

Saturday - Day 6

STILL BELIEVING-Evan Williams

Haydock 5.0pm (Class 2) Mares Chase Final (Good-Soft)

Saturday 31st March 2018

Recommended 1Pt E/W @ 20/1 with PaddyPower

Still Believing seems to love Ludlow where she has won several times over small and larger obstacles. Presumably, having qualified for this Mares Final, she travels in the hope of some decent ground. There is a lot of rain about but the conditions up North currently mean The Going description is G-S but this may change!

Still Believing began the year winning over Hurdles off a mark of 127. She was then given a Hurdles mark of 132 which was the same as her Chase mark. Not having run over Hurdles since October 2017, she has been beaten a long way over Fences and her Chase mark has tumbled to 120! To my mind if connections thought she was regressive over Fences surely they would have brought her back over Hurdles and she has been described as a tough and hardy Mare who is a real trier. Hence it could well be they have targeted this race, given she has only had the 1 outing since Christmas and the £30k Prize Money is certainly not to be sniffed at!

Sunday - Day 7

TRAFFIC FLUIDE-Gary Moore

2:15 Plumpton 1 Apr 2018 ATR

2m4½f (2m4f114y) toteplacepot Novices’ Hurdle (Class 4) (4yo+)

Recommended 3Pt Win @ 4/6 generally (If the Trainer is right, then we are likely to see far skinnier odds come the off??)

I tend not to search out odds on shots to put up as my tips but 1 was continuously drawn to the 4/6 readily available, about Traffic Fluide.

Traffic Fluide runs at Plumpton, which is Gary Moore’s local track and is a place where he rarely comes home without a winner.

This is a Class 4 Novice Hurdle and he hasn’t run in a hurdle since he was running in The French Provinces back in mid September 2014.

Gary Moore must have thought a fair bit of him as for his first run for new connections he was pitched straight into a Grade 2 Novice Chase at Ascot! Then following a few runs in handicap chases his mark rose to 154 by the time he was taking on the likes of Un De Sceaux in The Clarence house Chase at Ascot.

His Chase mark, in fact, peaked at 162 and he was actually giving weight to Altior and generally plying his trade in Grade 1 Chases.

Although his Chase mark has come down to 140, he was still given an RPR of 129 when running in The Festival Plate at The Cheltenham Festival, which is still good enough to beat the opposition here.

Back in November Gary Moore named Traffic Fluide as his STAR QUALITY horse in his Racing Post Stable Tour, adding “soft ground is important to this classy chaser” and suggested “he needs a step up in distance.” Moore recently stated in Website Blog….. “As for the weekend we have runners coming out of our ears with five declared at Plumpton on Monday and fifteen entered on Monday, thirteen of which are at Plumpton. The most interesting on Sunday might be Traffic Fluide who, in an attempt to get his groove back, will run in a Novice hurdle with only five even entered to take him on. It will be his first start over the smaller obstacles since his first three starts in France back in 2014 and it will be his first sight of English hurdles. He doesn’t lack for speed so the drop back to two and a half miles shouldn’t hurt and his rivals are all rated considerably lower than his chase mark. He will doubtless go off long odds on but most important is building up the confidence of this very classy horse.”

My take on this, is they appear to have found an opportunity at their local track to win a race comfortably, in the hope they can rebuild his confidence, having been forced into the big league of the chasing ranks for far too long.

We will soon find out.
