Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds Predictions, Betting Tips and Preview

The season started so positively for Sheffield Wednesday who have hit an immediate wall amidst controversy with their leading marksman. Leeds will be a working progress until Monk in August, but showed signs of life on Tuesday evening. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.

Game: Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United
Venue: Hillsborough
Kick-off: 12.30pm, Saturday 20th August

Unfortunately this game is not live. I do have a sneaking suspicion without having looked yet, that there will be an online stream as US Channels often stream additional Championship games. Sheffield Wednesday are the home side here and they’ll hope for a repeat of their opening day performance where they beat Aston Villa 1-0.

Things have gone wrong for them since, losing to Burton Albion 3-1 midweek and being dumped out of the cup by Cambridge. They did play their part in a 0-0 draw away to Norwich, where it emerged Fernando Forestieri had refused to travel with the squad. Since then Wednesday have allowed five goals against weaker opposition and lost twice.

Leeds were always going to be a working progress. Not only does Monk need time to properly implement his ideas, Leeds are still in pre-season timing. Luke Ayling and Liam Bridcutt have joined on this week to add to last week’s addition of Pablo Hernandez, who was delayed by FA paperwork. Swedish International and Serie A defender Pontus Janssen is set to join later today, meaning it’s been United’s busy week yet.

From the quality I can see coming in, Leeds fans should be patient. I think the Whites fans should be bracing themselves (eventually and for once) a pleasing season.

Match Predictions and Betting Tips

Sheffield Wednesday are favourites here at best odds of 4/5 with Sky Bet. The draw can be backed at 5/2 with Bet Victor and the away side are 19/5. I really did expect to see something weighted more in favour of Sheffield Wednesday, but there’s a lot of factors to take in to account for this one.

Leeds are always going to be underdogs travelling to a team like Wednesday in the current circumstances, but I do think there is clearly a little bit of unsettlement at Hillsborough. A home point against Fulham is hardly setting things alight, but we won’t know just how big that moment was until Saturday. Chris Wood’s spectacular late goal earned Leeds their first point in front of fantastic support.

Sheffield Wednesday were my favourites alongside Newcastle and Brighton to be competing for automatic promotion this season and they still might. If there is anything going on behind the scenes or Fernando is going to be a continual problem, it needs resolving soon, because you can’t afford teams a head start given the quality of the league this year.

I do think we also need to consider the fact that this is a fierce rivalry. Sides are capable of putting any issues aside and also bridging gaps in quality when it comes to games like this. We’ve seen Leeds suffer the embarrassment of a 6-0 loss here in recent times, but we’ve also seen them compete since the sides started meeting regularly again in 2012.

Leeds have lost twice in eight meetings with Wednesday, and I think the momentum handed to them midweek makes Leeds United +0.5 a reasonable bet, but instead I’m going to go with both teams to score as our free betting tip. That can be backed at 21/20 with William Hill. It’s happened in two of four for both sides so far and eight of the last 10 meetings between the pair has seen both register a goal.

SO it comes to that time where we have to predict a correct score and a goal scorer. Well, it’s not beyond Leeds to win here, but just another point would be a good building block. A 1-1 draw is best odds of 13/2 with Bet Victor.

I think if United are going to threaten the goal then the Swede is going to be a part of it. Antonsson has a goal to his name so far, but he should he’s have. He finds time and space well and had particularly good one on one chances against QPR and Fulham, so I think it’s just a matter of time before he scores. My prediction is Marcus Antonsson could be an any time scorer here at 27/10 with Bet Victor.
