Tiger Roll Can Win Third Grand National in 2021
Tiger Roll has been denied the chance to make history in the 2020 Randox Health Grand National as the race will not go ahead this year. The 2018 and 2019 winner was set to line up in the Aintree feature for the third time, bidding to become the first horse to win the marathon contest for the third year running.
Although the season is now over for the fantastic chaser, connections are already preparing for the 2021 contest where he remains a great bet to come out on top again. Tiger Roll made two appearances on the track this season. He finished second behind Easysland in the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and was fifth of nine in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan.
Gordon Elliott’s runner was 17 lengths clear of the rest of the pack when crossing the line at Prestbury Park at the Festival in what was a run his trainer was delighted with. He was expected to come on for that outing and peak at Aintree in the Grand National.
It will be no surprise if the Irish trainer takes a similar path next season for Tiger Roll, which will see him fresh by the time April comes around. Elliott, who has the favourite in the horse racing betting at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival in the National Chase, RSA Chase, Marsh Novices' Chase and Novices' Hurdle, could even choose to bypass Cheltenham for the dual Grand National winner.
Looking to equal Red Rum’s record
Although Tiger Roll will not be able to prevail in the Grand National in three straight years, he can still match the record for the number of wins by a horse.
Only one runner in Grand National history has been able to land the marathon contest three times and that was Red Rum who managed the feat in 1977. Like the Grand National legend, Tiger Roll just seems to come alive over the bigger fences at Aintree and he should do that again next April.
The Irish runner did what no horse had done in 45 years when he defended his crown in the race in 2019. His margin of success was even wider than in 2018 so the extra weight was not enough to stop him.
Tiger Roll likely to have top weight again
Tiger Roll’s was handed top weight of 11st-10lb by the official handicapper ahead of the 2020 contest. The weights will, of course, be revised for those taking part in 2021, but it is likely that the two-time winner will head that list again.
It has been 43 years since a horse carried top weight to victory in the Grand National so the stats will once again be against Tiger Roll. The famous steeplechase is a much different contest now though, as recent results point to higher rated horses coming out on top more frequently.
In many ways, a victory in 2021 will be even more impressive if Tiger Roll can record his third success in the world's most famous steeplechase. The horse has overcome many setbacks throughout his career so this one may be an obstacle he is able to clear.
