Triumph Over Derby, Villa Back In the Premier League

Since their relegation in 2016 following a dismal season that saw them only win three games, Villa have struggled to get back into the Premier League, and this Monday saw them manage it following a win over rivals Derby County reports

Villa lost out to Fulham in last years championship playoff, and so it was a chance for redemption for them. A tricky two stage semi final saw them all square against West Brom and the game having to go to penalties. Villa getting the upper hand in the shoot-out to earn them a chance against Derby County in the Final that took place last Monday. Villa was to triumph over the Rams 2-1 and thus not only ensure promotion to the Premiership but a windfall of £170M as well.

Villa looked to have had the game well in hand after a first-half goal from Anwar El Ghazi was followed by a second from John McGinn with just thirty minutes to go in the game. However, Frank Lampard’s Derby decided to ramp up the pressure and substitute Jack Marriott had a stab from eight yards out, with Martyn Waghorn deflecting it into the back of the net to bring the game within reach of Derby.

Derby struggled on and even had an extra seven minutes of injury time to try and secure a second goal and push things on into extra time. Alas, it was not to be and so the Rams face another year of football in the Championship.

Villa’s win caps a season that didn’t start they well and saw them unlikely to be playoff contenders getting close to the end of the season, but a run of wins in their final ten games saw them sneak into fifth place and give them the chance to go up.

The game was a cagey affair at the start as both teams didn’t want to make an obvious mistake in such an important tie, and it looked like it was going to remain goalless at half-time, but it was to be Anwar El Ghazi’s run on the blind side that struck home first, putting Dean Smith’s team into the lead.

Derby keeper Kelly Roos made a critical mistake when he saw a second-half second attempt by El Ghazi, catch him out of position letting Villa’s McGinn have an empty goal into which to head the ball.

This saw the Rams come alive and start a comeback fight to keep themselves in it. Marriott and Waghorn linking up to grab a goal and bring them back into it. However, they never manage to get the second they needed. So Derby will have to wait until next year for a chance to win promotion again.

Villa has had a tough year, which nearly saw them head into administration after it came to light at the end of the previous season that they had missed the deadline to pay HMRC some £4M in tax. It was looking like they were going to have to sell players to clear this debt, but they were, fortunately, able to resolve matters without this happening.
