West Ham VS Astra Giurgiu Predictions, Betting Tips, Preview

The Hammers came away from the first leg with a draw last Thursday and will now look to complete the job at home. Billic has a number of injury concerns ahead of this one, so rotation isn’t too much of an option. Below is our match preview, prediction and betting tips.

Game: West Ham vs Astra Giurgiu

Venue: Olympic Stadium

Kick-off: 7.45pm, Thursday 25th August

I sat and watched the game last Thursday and although I was quite pleased to have our winning bet , I question if we deserved it. Astra are a shadow of the team that knocked West Ham out this time last year and there’s no doubt at all for me that West Ham will be comfortable enough in qualifying from this tie.

A young defence made a few mistakes that lead to a well taken goal last week, and at times the Hammers did struggle to play their type of football on a pitch that was less than up to scratch. For visitors Giurgiu it’s been a few months of turmoil off the pitch which has clearly had an effect.

They look nothing like the side that also won their domestic league for the first time last year and I think West Ham have to really take the initiative in this one and not let Astra hang around. They lack quality but they do look a team willing to scrap.

Match Predictions and Betting Tips

West Ham are best odds of 1/3 to make it three competitive wins from three in their new home and I think they’ll do so. The draw is available at 41/10 with 888Sport whilst the away team are priced as high as 8/1 with Boylesports. And that would be some shock.

We know that Billic has openly said there will be a focus on the Europa League this season and I think it’s a good time to target it. I’m not saying West Ham will win it, but they are a top eight side in the best league in the world, they have a wonderful new 60,000 seater home and they have a really dynamic team. And they have a manager who fills you with belief. If West Ham can get a favourable group, I think this could be a big year for them.

Our free betting tip here is West Ham -1.5AH at 24/23 with Bet Victor. I think there’s a very big gulf in quality between the sides that was masked in last week’s surroundings. At home I expect the Hammers to make light work of a team like this, with or without their current injuries.
For my correct score prediction, we have to line up with our free betting tip on the handicap. I have no problem doing that based on what I saw in the first leg. A very young West Ham team managed a 1-1 draw on a dog of pitch last week and despite the home team scoring, like we suggested they would, they didn’t have any quality at all and they were a lot worse than last season. Back West Ham to win 2-0 at 23/4 with 888Sport.

I think Jonathan Calleri will feature again as he did last Thursday. Calleri is far from a rotation player and with injuries in the camp he’s a talented young man who I expect will force himself in to Billic’s Premier League plans in September. Back him to score at 13/10 with Bet365.
