Which Sports Have the Most Complicated Rules?

Without rules, we have chaos.

That’s true for just about everything in life, ranging from international law down to the by-laws we must follow while riding a train. While we may not agree on exactly what those rules should be, almost everyone accepts that there should be at least some.

What’s true for society is also true for sports and games. If a football team was allowed to field any number of players at once, the richest clubs would simply pack the field with as many bodies as possible to make it impossible for their opponents to get through.

Similarly, if there were no rules in snooker, players would simply pick up the balls and place them into the pockets with their
hands. In both cases, these sports would get pretty boring very quickly as there would be no true sense of competition.

But while all sports have a rulebook of some kind, they are not all as complex or comprehensive as each other. If you’re
someone who enjoys betting on sports, then this is something you need to factor into your betting systems,as the rules can
have a major effect on the outcome of a game.
So which sports have the most complicated rules?

Poker

Poker is one of the most popular mind sports on the planet, up there with chess. Every year, millions of players take part in
tournaments, ranging from local events for amateurs to major competitions like the European Poker Tour and the World Series
of Poker.

The rules of poker are relatively simple. The basic principle is that the winner of each hand is the one holding the highestranked combination at the end in what is known as the ‘showdown’.

To support this, there is a codified set of combinations known as ‘hands’, each with an agreed ranking. The royal flush is the
highest and a high card (no pair) is the lowest. However, there is much more to poker than this.

Things are complicated slightly by the fact that there are many different variants that each have their own unique modifications
to the rules and the hands. This is in addition to the different rules for tournaments and cash games, the fact that players can
win by bluffing (instead of having the best hand), and the process of blinds and betting rounds.

Formula 1

Motorsports, by their nature, need to have a lot of rules. Unlike disciplines like football, where there are two teams of 11
people competing together on a regulation-sized field, car and bike racing adds in additional variables like the design of the
cars, the people involved in maintaining them, and the different layouts of circuits.

It is, therefore, no wonder that Formula 1 has one of the most complex sets of rules of any sport. In fact, F1 is so complicated
that it actually has several different rule books. For most of its history, this has involved two – ‘Sporting Regulations’ and
‘Technical Regulations’ – with the technical regulations focused on the design of the cars, and the sporting regulations covering
behavior.

However, in 2021 Formula 1’s complexity increased with the addition of ‘Financial Regulations’ which dictate how much a
team can spend on its championship campaign. The rationale behind this is to ensure one outfit can’t ‘buy’ its victories by
having deeper pockets, similar to the ‘Financial Fair Play’ rules in football.
These three books span almost 350 pages of very dry and detailed specifications, making F1 a sport with one of the most
complicated rules in the world.

Cricket

versions of the game with additional rules for both men’s and women’s competitions, the ICC Cricket World Cup, and the
Super League.

The ICC Men’s Standard Test Match Playing Conditions released in November 2022 spans 99 pages and prescribes everything
from the number of players allowed to compete in a game to the size, material, and positioning of the wickets.

All of the other variants have rulebooks of similar lengths, meaning crickets rules are actually longer than Formula 1. On top
of that, national governing bodies can also make their own rules for domestic events.
