Lottery Betting Tips
LOTTERY BETTING TIPS
Now as a lottery by its very nature is the ultimate randomised event, you may think that lottery betting tips are somewhat redundant. However, there is more to making bets on lotteries than meets the eye, as you will soon discover. While the actual drawing of lottery balls may be an entirely random event, there are still a few useful pieces of advice which should be borne in mind before you place your first lottery bets. Keep reading to discover how to maximise your chances of making successful lottery bets.
Now, let us first address the thorny issue of so-called ‘lucky numbers’, otherwise known as numbers which are ‘hot’ or ‘cold’. Many lottery sites will give players information about past draws, and specifically which balls have been chosen the most and the least amount of times. This information is used by a lot of lottery players when they are deciding which numbers to pick. After all, on a superficial level it seems to make sense. All lottery numbers should be drawn an equal number of times, so why not pick the ones that have appeared least? Or conversely, if some numbers have been appearing a lot why not ride the hot streak?
The reason that the above logic does not make sense is due to something known as ‘gambler’s fallacy’. This is the notion that just because a random event happened many times in the past, the opposite is ‘due’ to occur. For example if red comes up five times in a row during a game of roulette, you may be tempted to pile all your money onto black. This appeals to our mind’s sense of logic, but in fact it is false. The roulette wheel doesn’t know that red has come up all those times. The previous spin has absolutely zero impact on the one which will come after. It’s the same with recurring lottery numbers. Whether number 7 appears in ten consecutive draws, or hasn’t shown up in the last 50 draws, will have no impact on its being drawn this time around.
Tips that Work
Here is some advice for lottery bettors which actually does hold up. First off, think carefully about the lottery you are going to bet, as not all lotteries have been created equal. For example, the French Lotto gives you a very generous 1 in 6 chances of winning some prize. That compares very favourably to the Italian Lottery, where you have just one chance in 314 of winning a prize. The odds of winning the Swedish Lotto jackpot are a reasonable 1 in 6,724,520, a lot better than your 1 to 292,201,338 shot of landing the Powerball jackpot. Of course, the prizes are very different too, but you may prefer the vastly improved shot at the £15 million Swedish jackpot to the long-shot of winning Powerball.
Choosing Winning Numbers
The mistake that most people make when choosing lottery numbers, is that they pay too much attention to what they consider to be lucky digits. And not just the gambler’s fallacy we mentioned above. People tend to choose numbers which relate to important events in their life, birthdays and other special dates in particular. The problem is that this restricts you to a maximum of 31 numbers, meaning wins tend to be diluted. You are better off ignoring dates like these, and choosing a truly random selection of numbers. Other tips are self-evident: such as the more times you enter, the better chance of winning, (within your budget, of course). Syndicate bets are a growing trend online, meaning you can increase your chances of winning by betting on a wider selection of numbers. You don’t have to round up everyone in the office either, as you can simply join an existing online syndicate.
Unfortunately there are no miracle solutions to winning the lottery. What you can do is to improve your chances by playing it smart. Pick the best lottery to bet on, and don’t follow the herd when it comes to selecting your numbers. Syndicate bets and regular betting habits will also reduce the odds a little. The application of a little common sense can go a long way when it comes to lottery betting strategy.
